how many crews should the flagship keep for best?

wulala

first time, i only have quite few gold,so i only recuited few ppl,

but later i found it took much longer time to reload the cannons in the sea

battle,so i tried to get more crews, but there was always a problem,

my crews were easy to get starve, and my ship didn't have extra space

for food, altough i tired to buy food as much as i can

I always keep maximum crew. But opinions mayl vary. Depends of what you are doing at that time.

As for food, I always just grab every Spanish ship I see to keep myself replenished. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> I have not been forced to buy food ever. Attacking, (and defeating), other ships will get you the food and gold you need. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

The minimium crews listed is just to sail the ship I think, but if you have less than that your speed at sailing will be reduced and your guns will load VERY slowly. You need enough crew so that some can sail the ship while others worry about the guns.

I'm not sure exactly what you're doing. When you first start a game, go to the tavern and recruit. That should get you enough guys to sail your ship and man your cannon. As for food, they sell it in the merchants and you should always loot everything you can from every ship you grab. Even if you have the smallest ship fully staffed, you should have plenty of room in the hold for several months of sailing at least.

What ive been doing is maxing out my war galleon, and then keeping a small sloop or brig but with a min crew, that way I can use it for the extra storage, my pirates eat plenty <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/no.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":no" border="0" alt="no.gif" />

Hehe - I do the opposite. I keep a maxed out Royal Sloop for combat and some other galleon type for storage and to carry extra bodies for town sacking <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I´ll have a SotL with 300 - 450 crewmembers. I would only use one ship (the others slow you down ) if there aren´t the probs where to store food.

I usually manage with `120-150` men and a single ship, generally a Large Frigate or a Ship of the Line. This way I load 40 tons of food and 50 or 60 guns, respectively (I keep some extra guns to replace ones destroyed in battle). I can pretty much do anything with that crew compliment, including attacking most towns, previously softened by indians or pirates.

I don't like keeping larger crews because:

- <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/beer2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":beer" border="0" alt="beer2.gif" /> I'd need more space (another ship) for food, and that implies having even more men to man the support ship.
- <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":c" border="0" alt="mad.gif" /> The more men you have, the faster their mood will decrease, since their individual share of the plunder gets smaller. And since you have a large (possibly maximum) crew PLUS the extra men needed to man the cargo vessel, you can't sail around for long before you're forced to divide the plunder.

However, I've found that the best support ship you can have is the East Indiaman, with its huge cargo space and minimal amount of crew required to sail it properly. Nevertheless, East Indiamen are quite rare, so you might as well capture a Large Merchantman in the meantime.

With that amount of men, you'd be able to carry only (100 cargo space - 48 cannons=) 52 tons of food, which'd run out quite quickly, even with a Cooper onboard.

The last game I had Henry Morgans large frigatte and always around `100-200` men, if I wanted to attack a larger city I had enough space for some extra crewman. In that case I took another ship with me to have enough food. But I use to sell those If I dont need em. That configuration is also very helpful with the quests.

Aye ye can 'ave food problems if ye 'ave triple hammock upgrade,ye carry more crew ,I'd be doing what Cap'n Toat says, tow a long an extra vessel te carry extra supplies <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

<b>wulala, </b>when you go to the merchant in town, check to see if you have more cannon than you need - they take up lots of space. You might have picked up a few if you boarded and took a ship, and IIRC, when you sell ships, the shipyard will dump cannons LAST when dumping cargo you did not sell to the merchant.
