Although I've already posted this as a response to the software t&l question, I think it'd be nice in here too as this is the first page I got to with google.
Yarr, I have a dell d500 (Centrino 1.3 512MB RAM WinXP) which has an intel extreme graphics 2 (82852/82855 GM/GME) card. I'm pretty confident this card doesn't support hardware T&L (Intel says so).
I experienced the crash phenomenon too; one of two things happened:
-the game would either just completely crash without any dialogues and I'd get returned to the windows shell; or
-the game would crash and the error would get caught by the Microsoft error reporting system. (errno: c00..005 which is access denied, I think?)
Then I tried a suggestion I read in a post by NobleJMS (turning graphics options all the way up) which fixed the crashing problem.

QUOTE(NobleJms)

This is what you can do: turn the WORLD and OBJECT details ALL THE WAY UP, and run the game. If it still crashes, try turning ALL the graphic options to their maximum, and run the game. Again, if it still crashes, try different combination of WORLD and OBJECTS graphic levels, and run the game.[/quote]
I played last night for about 6 hours without a crash. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="

" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> (I actually used the exit game interface for the first time)
Of course the game is now rather jerky at times, but generally very playable.
Another issue is that occasionally a model's texture will fail to load and that model's surface will render as a gold reflective surface. (the models for the player character and the `sign-up` officer for the dutch pretty much never load)
Of course it's not perfect, but I have been able to play and am quite enjoying it. I have also experienced some joy turning down certain graphics options to increase performance.
All in all I am most happy that the game is working on my laptop as I am far from home on a contract and don't really fancy having to wait to get home to play.
