I am beginning a new game - Shall i start it with mods ?

Lannister

Landlubber
Hello,

I`m a newbie here. I just bought myself a copy of Pirates of the carribbean and i was wondering about the following things :

1. I heard that the game is very buggy, but there are no patches around. Is this true ? and if yes, are there any `fan-made`-patches ?
2. Shall i use mods if i want to play this game for the first time ? and if yes could you give me some recommendations ?

Thanks in advance,
L.

1.Yeah it's true no patches but there is a build on the pirates ahoy mods center. Take a look here :
<a href="http://mods.piratesahoy.net/index.php?action=view&view=entry&entryid=73" target="_blank">http://mods.piratesahoy.net/index.php?acti...ntry&entryid=73</a>
2.The game is better with! More weapons, more characters, more ships...

Hi Lannister,

The mods available at PiratesAhoy! do include some patches for various things.

It's a bit of a tough question as to whether to play the game with mods first off. People here will swear by the mods (in a good way) and they are right, the mods (all nicely packaged together in a single, easy to install build) do make the game a whole lot better, however, it's also nice to play the game as originally installed and then go back and play it modified. You'll appreciate the mods even more that way, and the original game isn't all that bad.

Personally, I first played and completed the game with no mods/patches and actually enjoyed it quite a lot, but then I further enjoyed it over and over with the various mods the great people at this site have created. So, from my own experience, I guess I'd have to reccommend you do it that way.

Anyway, welcome aboard and don't hesitate to post more queries and stuff here, people love talking about this game, and while your here, check out all the news about the other upcoming pirate games. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p:" border="0" alt="pirate2.gif" />

Ahoy Lannister, welcome tew dis 'ere humble pirate site mate,I;d be recommend'n ye play widout de build mod till ye get's a feel fer de game, but if yer de type 'at like tew grab de bull be de horns,be sure tew read de readme files fer Build 11 as it adds alot more tew de gameplay. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> Lannister, and welcome aboard! Pull up a keg, have a seat, and have a couple on us! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I love the mods, but I played the game through - after several starts and stops and restarts - once without them first... And it's probably better for you to do so, simply because you will gain game experience before you try the mods, PLUS you will have much more appreciation for the mods after you see the changes.

Again, welcome aboard. We're glad you sailed into these fair waters, and hope to see you around here often! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

I say start with the mods,
Like I did. Well, erm, I gave up on the unmodded game once my lugger sank for the 10th time.
Erm... Go with the build.

One thing to keep in mind, Lannister, is if you want to enjoy the game fully, don't rush out and try to beat all the main quests. Sail around, do your own thing, and you'll enjoy it all the more. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Cheers, all you friendly folks out there, thanks for all the quick replies.
I`ll lift my mug to all of you, mateys !

I'd recomemnd playing the game without mods first. That way you'll get a feel for the game and it's still alot of fun!

After you beat the game, then I'd start over with the latest build <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I cast my vote for the build. The game is so much richer and complex with them. The only thing to be learned form the original game is how much better the build is.

I must have played the retail game for... 10 minutes. Then, as i usually do when i buy a game i looked through the internet for updates, addons or mods, and found 'the build'... boy, ive never played vanilla POTC again!!!

Lannister,
Welcome to PA.
I'm with the people who say play without the mods first, but two things;

1. save often and keep a couple of games saved at various points of the game as backups. It will possibly save you from having to restart the game as many times as I did.

2. do searches on PA if you get stuck or can't figure out how to do something because if it's giving you problems, it probably did the same thing to most of us.

I should probably have said three things, the third is hang out on the site a lot and post any questions you can't find an answer to, I think you can tell from the responses to your question that there are a lot of friendly people in these waters...

Except for Rico...
(it's a Hungarian thing.)

The only reason for playing the stock game : To appreciate how much work these modders have done in order to turn a rather mediocre game into a great game. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

You and me both Lady Cat, why do you think we're such avid swordspeople? Hungarians are the best sabruers in the world. Heh... Yes. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

You know, I studied fencing in school, and after I moved here to L.A. actually took classes at the Falcon Studios, owned and operated by Greg Faulkner, who taught some of the old swashbucklers like Errol Flynn to fence... We students would be `group-taught` by an instructor, and then had the honor of fifteen minutes with "the Master", Faulkner himself (who was an Olympic fencer in 1938 & '32). Then, Faulkner was "older than God" - looked more than a little like Sir Laurence Olivier in Neil Diamond's move "The Jazz Singer" (including the thick glasses), but he could still work you up into a sweat... He was a very cool guy and I am really proud to say that I had a chance to learn a little fencing from him...

Isn't that amazing, how many sports are out there where you can get whupped by a guy who is 75+ ?

This is why I have hope for my own future in fencing, now if I could just get out and go do it.

Lannister,
just in case you haven't noticed it we do tend to get off topic on occasion, hope you don't mind. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p:" border="0" alt="pirate2.gif" />

<i> second edit... brain, where are you?</i>

i would love to get into fencing i always had a passion of it but my work schedule is not stable enough to actually commit, my schedule changes on a dime- i would love to learn though
