I want to be a swashbuckler! Any tips?

I've played the game successfully through rogue level (score: 118--Yay!) and decided to try swashbuckling. The dancing is fine, the ship battles are fine, but I can't even begin to duel! On all the previous levels, I have used a rapier and gone for quick attacks--very little parrying, jumping, etc. That apparently doesn't work on the swashbuckler level.

How are you swashbucklers succeeding in duels?
 
Relying on the `4-4`-`4-4`-`4-4`-4 "strategy" to win a duel was your mistake. It's an easy habit to get into, but it will kill you on Swashbuckler. What I do is keep my left hand on the 4 and my right hand positioned on the 8, 5, and 2 keys. I only ever react to the other guy. If he goes high I hit 8 then 4. If he goes with a thrust I hit 5 then 4. If he goes low I hit 2 then 4. It works well enough. I find developing the 7 and 1 attacks takes too long and I usually get nailed when I try to get too fancy.
 
Thanks. I'll try the `2-handed` strategy. (But I think I'll retreat to rogue level to practice 'cause I'm getting tired of sitting in that jail cell.)
 
if you want to use an aid while you practice, change the keymap file so pause is the q key and not `shift-p` or Pause/Break. then your left pinkie can quickly hit the q key to pause until you get used to what you want to do next. i also use the same tactics as Fab. you can kinda remember them by when his sword goes <b>high</b>, you hit the lower key, 2. when he goes <b>low</b>, you hit the higher key, 8.

swash is hard for sure harr

the fencing part is very havy to win the `4-4`-4 tactic is not bad
but you need fencing skill at beginning
you only react never do your move before him or you will loose harr

everytime he start to move you press 4 normal attack....
you will be mostly first because its the fastest hit you can do
but some have special skill in fast high attack or fast jump
something like this the chick in bar tells you that whats his
special move so take care if he have special dont only use
the `4-4`-4 tactic sometimes you have to defend

later but see its not to late get the intems as fast as possible
you need perfect balanced swords and the fencingshirt
always dance and make no fault so you kiss her on mouth
and you will get gift
and buy these items in the bar whenever you see it
its for your longlivity
every time you get hit he hits you 1% of your youth .......
if you have the weeds and inka paste its only 0.5%

so do the best m8 harr
 
I just moved up to swashbuckler. But i still only have the 7,4,1 keys open as fencing options. How do i unlock the 8, 5 , 2?

They're open. Don't let the symbols mess you up. The X through them simply means they cancel out the image depicted. Get it? It's a parry. So if the image for a thrust is on the 4 key, the same image with an X is on the 5, as it's an "`anti-thrust`".

As for Skipper's suggestion to stick with `4-4`-`4-4` if you have all the shirts, swords, armor, and herbs I don't recommend it. It might work while you're young, but as soon as you get even a little bit slow, you will be back in that jail cell. If you learn to fight properly, you can win a battle without any special items. It's tough, but it can be done.

Thanks, all. I've had good success using the pause method to learn to do the 8 and 2 defenses. (I wasn't just using `4-4`-4 before, but more like `4-2`-`4-2`, at least against guys that weren't also using rapiers.) I'm not really convinced that the way to go is to only use the defensive moves against the `name-brand` pirates and villians: I've met up with some unnamed pirates and pirate hunters that also had some `lightning-quick` attacks.

What I'm doing now is using defensive moves followed by thrusts against any thrust or high chop, but usually using a low slash against a low slash from slower sword. So far, I'm doing this with just the fencing specialty--no balanced sword or silk shirt yet (although I have hopes I will get them soon, as I love to dance).
