I'm whooping on the Spanish but they are ignoring me?!

What gives. I've maxed out my Ranks in Spanish and English so I decided I would now start attacking the Spanish and impressing the Dutch and French with that. I'm attacking every Spanish ship I come accross (about 25 so far) and I even sunk a ship carrying a new Spanish Governer, but when I sail up to a Spanish Stronghold, they don't fire on me and I don't have the option to attack. Is this because I'm a Spanish Duke? Or do I just need to keep attacking them until they finally get pissed off?

Have you talked to the Spanish governor? He may have to "chide" you for attacking Spanish shipping before they start to notice you're doing it! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

I have noticed that they are much more forgiving as you go up in rank, and that it is much harder to piss them off when you are Duke. They get more pissed when you attack ships on a mission like the governor one you took or ships transporting troops or military payroll. If your object is to really piss them off and gain favor with their enemies, sacking their towns is the best way. I figure a town is worth at least 5 or 6 ships.

Yes, I agree doing that would tend to piss them off quicker.

I can't do this, when I sail up, they do not open fire and there is no option to attack on the city screen.
 
You can always attack from land. You can fire at the city's fort by pushing the space bar when you are just outside of the city. Do this enough times, and when you sail in, you will get the option to attack.

this will do it

start attacking the town with cannons until their fort starts firing back problam fixed <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />
 
Attack from land whenever possible. Firing at the town from the sea will make it less valuable.
 
Would a nice strategy be gaining favor with the spanish early in the game becoming Duke (free repairs, free upgrades) 'cause there are so many spanish cities then it will be no problem getting all the good stuff for free and after you're a spanish Duke, work on improving your relations with the other? and eventually end of warring spain on behalf of the three other nationalities?

Of course you need to use the good will of the missionaries to remove the ransoms from attacking english, dutch and french ships/towns...
 
Yeah, I like that idea Dusk. Start off working towards Spanish rank, then you have plenty of places to stop for repairs once you've turned traitor and are plundering the Spanish main.
 
I say you should try streiking past the goveners daughter, that would make the gov mad. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> maybe even impress the daughter.

I tried them all (except for the streaking one <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dev.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":d:" border="0" alt="dev.gif" /> ), and now the Spanish are plenty ticked at me. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />
