Is ANYONE doing any modeling?

I was wondering if anyone was actually modeling anything - or knows how to model either in Maya 4.5 or 3DMax... I need a teensy tiny change to an existing character model and wonder if, with Inez's model export tool, if we could get that changed?

I have Maya 4.5 but I am all thumbs with it at the moment, and unfortunately do not have much time to learn it... i can do it for you catalina, however i only have 3dstudio release 3 at the moment actually i dont think i can get a newer version anyways, sorry to not have replied otherwise but i was muddin thru these posts and saw this i'd like to get back into some of that moddelin tho can you export items (new items) into the game yet?

Inez Dias of the PMT was on the boards recently and posted a link to her tool (THANK YOU INEZ!!!) for exporting new character models into the game:

What I want to do is have the "Searcher" model (it's the one I'm using for my Sneaky Trader character) wear an eyepatch on his right eye. (the left one, as you're looking at him). I started to make one, but was having no real luck with it - got a smoothed out spot after I took away some polygons where his eye is supposed to go, but then I got stuck because the only way to export is to image map it, and I haven't been able to get that done yet. The model doesn't look that great, either, it was a newbie `half-assed` job... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rolleyes:" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> I've had no real time to apply myself seriously to learn Maya yet... The Pirat9 or Corsair2 has got the kind of patch I'm looking for.

This is going to be cool if you can do it - it's meant as a "disguise" for part of the mod...

sounds easy enough, suraknar and i were making new weapons , i was making / moding them with 3dstudio and them sending them to him to export(he had maya and the plugins and new how to export models with their 'locators') so if you would be able to import models saved in that 3dstudio r3 format then this would be no problem at all, er except i would need you to convert them into i think it was .lwo format or somthin with the .gm viewer (remember ?) then send the models to me, i'll have to see if i still have the plugins for 3dstudio, but if this werks out then its just pulling an eyepatch off one model an adding that mesh to the new model i think the eyepatch model will cover the models normal eye and so long as the eyepatch is mapped then yer good to go -i may be wrong tho if you could export the converted .gm files of the corsair2 or pirat9 and the searcher, (actually ima need alot of files looks like) and i'll need yer texture file for the searcher i think, and if you would be so kind, im using phtotshop cs now and the old pluggins to read and write .dds files don't work for some reason if you could send new pluggins maybe i think i already downloaded the tx converter

All right, Boocha, here's some stuff to help:

These are texturing tools from NVidia that will allow you to read .dds files in Photoshop CS and ALSO in 3DSMax. There are several more quite useful tools for the 3D artist, such as a .dds thumbnail viewer for Windows Explorer. Also it looks like there is MORE than adequate documentation on what to do, at links to Microsoft webpages.

There's also a couple of links for PaintShopPro and GIMP.

The GM viewer format transfer was from .gm to .obj.

I think in looking at Inez's utility, you can use 3DSMax to do the whole export. It's been designed to convert between gm file format and VRML, so PotC models can be converted to VRML, loaded into 3DSMax, edited, saved as VRML again and converted back to gm. You can export from 3DSMax in VRML format and put in the skeleton + convert to gm in one step with Inez's utility.

okay im on it, but have come accross some problems, think i need to reinstall phtotshop or somthin and i can't get the .gm viewer to werk i'll get back to you -(sigh) time to read those readme files...

i am sorry catallina, i tried the .gm viewer, and keep getting the errror messege, and are there any files i need to make phtotshop read the .dds files? i must be forgetting something, in any case, i would be unable to work on this at the moment, again my apologies when some time frees up again i will definitely attack this some more, but i don't want you to be thinkin im werkin on it when acually i cannot spare the time -hey but i just started tattooing, so anybody needs any skin werk done just drop by my shop n we can handle it -that is if yer in the los angeles area
 
Yes, there's a plugin you need for the .dds to be read in Photoshop. You can get it here - and there's some other stuff you need to make it work and it's all on this page:

No worries on time, I'm not expecting to get this one in under the wire for Build 12. The mod has gotten quite complicated, and I expect it'll take a lot longer than two weeks to put this together.
