I saw this once with Warhammer 40k as well, similar looking crash...

Here's the specs.

Athlon 2500+ Barton
ATI 9600XT
512mb memory.
soundblaster Live! Value.

installed Pirates!,seemed to start up with no problems at all and run ok for a minute or so. started a new game, went to the tavern and got a wierd lock up. The dagger could move left and right, but not up and down, the graphics locked and then the sound failed. Then the signal from the graphics card semed to die and it just black screened.

next, set the graphics card options to Performance and no fancy stuff, tried disabling shaders, shadows and turning off all the nice looking stuff in the game. same problem.

Did a graphics card driver update and a roll back. tried all drivers from 4.9 to 4.12. updated the sound drivers to the latest creative have available for my Soundblaster Live! Value.

No joy. Total `re-install`, no joy. Tried safe mode, no joy.

I'm not getting any graphical glitches, just a total "Black screen" and loss of video signal a few seconds after I set sail. It looks absolutely fine, then hangs the graphics, the sound then plays on for a few seconds before locking and then it's black screen followed by a finger on the reset button.

I realy want to play this game....

Someone give us a hand if you can...

Guess what?

Slapped on the Omega drivers, seems to work a treat now. even if the engine crashes, it recovers and picks up from where it left off...

Scrub the catalysts, go with the Omegas... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

I don't understand your technical lang. I am having a very similar problem. I can get to either the tavern or leaving the first port and the game locks and crashes my comp or it just closes itself down. I have tried to download the new drivers for my video card and sound card but I can't tell what my video card is. I have downloaded the drivers via the Hewlett packard website for my model of comp. This has not worked. I am desperate to play the game. Please help

to find your video card manufacturer try RIGHT clicking on an empty part of your desktop. then:

>properties
>settings
>advanced
>adapter

this will hopefully list your graphics card/on board chipset.
