modelling in 3ds max7

can anybody give me any tutorials for modelling a ship in 3ds max. Or can anybody tell me what techniques are used such as poly modelling or spline modelling?

Have you done a google search, almyster? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huhh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:k" border="0" alt="huhh.gif" />

I modeled some ships in 3DS MAx for <a href="http://www.avsim.com/vs" target="_blank">Virtual Sailor</a>. You could have a look at the Virtual Sailor sites for some boat-building tutorials. The same techniques would work for making PotC models. Only the final conversion technique would be different. Hope this helps as I don't have time today for a thorough reply.

i have searched everywhere but i cant find one that shows you how to build a ship.
What modelling technique do you use pieter?

Hmm. That's weird. I thought there were some tutorials on the subject, but now I can't find them myself anymore! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />
I usually just make a box, then drag the points of the box around until I get a shape looking like a hull. Quite simple, not accurate, but it does work. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />
If you need more help, I would be happy to give you some tips later. However, my program refuses to work at the moment, so giving tips would be all I can do. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

please pieter that would be great cheers <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="bow.gif" />

this is where i need help. i have made the hull of the black pearl. i created the basic shape with splines and when that was perfect i turned them into nurbs. To get the surface i just blended all the splines untill it was all surfaced. But when i cange it to an editable mesh it shows gaps between most surfaces and looks weird.

Hmm. I have to admit I never used the nurbs feature myself. I always just make it into an editable mesh and never bothered with the nurbs. Heck; I don't even know what it is. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" />
Could you show a screenshot of what happened? Maybe some of the normals* got flipped?

Just in case you don't know what these are, here is a description I wrote about them on the <a href="http://forums.simflight.com/viewforum.php?f=32" target="_blank">Virtual Sailor Support Forum</a> a few days ago:
<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Have you ever noticed how a polygon is only visible from one side? For example: If you make a box and move the camera inside, you don't see the box. This is because of the so-called "normals". The normals make it so that a polygon is only visible from one side. This is useful, because if the camera usually wouldn't be inside, for example, the box in my example above, the computer wouldn't need to draw the inside either, thus improving the FPS. If the normals get flipped, the polygons are visible from the other side.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

yeah i think its better not using nurms there really slow. Well am gonna start the model again and make a spline cage. If i need any help i will come to you pieter, thanks

ok can someone please post a tutorial on making a ship for potc im realli stuck. It can be done in any 3d programme just something to help me out please

ARRRR!!! Brother almyster! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/buds.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":drunk" border="0" alt="buds.gif" />
Maybe you should have a look in Flying Lab Software Forums <a href="http://www.flyinglab.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=30" target="_blank">User Content Section</a>.
Their are some Members with much knowledge about building a 3D ship. Just two examples, the last two finished models:
<a href="http://www.marionvanghent.net/Renders/Hermes-Masted-02.jpg" target="_blank">Marions Packet Boat</a>
<a href="http://www.flyinglab.com/forums/attachment.php?s=&postid=166440" target="_blank">Spankybus West Indiaman</a>

And to give you what you are looking for:
1. Hulltutorial from <a href="http://members.cox.net/potbs/tutorial.html" target="_blank">Sint Maartens Zeevaarders Syndicaat</a>
2. A second <a href="http://www.worldwideflood.com/CAD/start.htm" target="_blank">Hulltutorial</a>
3. Spankybus <a href="http://www.flyinglab.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7207" target="_blank">"Gmax Deck Cutting tutorial "</a>
4. Marions <a href="http://www.flyinglab.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8353" target="_blank">"Texturing a Hull -- Mini Tutorial"</a>

I hope that helps a little bit. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/poet.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":hmm" border="0" alt="poet.gif" />
