This topic is about telling knowledge about Maya, like HOW to use maya. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

OK i looked into how to import/export with maya: I took theBlackPearl.gm and exported it from GM viewer to .obj then i opened that theBlackPearl.obj and i WAS not able to save it but i WAS able to export it again to mb/ma filetype
(note that i don't know what filetype i must export it) anyways we just need now another converter/exporter what makes ma/mb to .obj or even .gm OR to .obj and then to .gm. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rolleyes:" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

As far as I know the GM Viewer can only export to OBJ, but not import again. Also as far as I know there are only two ways of making GM files: The TOOL (from VRML or X) and the Maya plugin.

Ahh! ..some good news and bad.

I found out that you can make .obj file to .gm with Inez Dias tool and heres the trick: .obj to .x and then .x to .gm BUT something there needs some editing because after that convertment the model's texture and line how deep in water it is suppose to be is screwed. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

And you can't make .obj to .gm in maya ..as far as i know. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

EDIT: Wait.........i checked that problem is coming from the first place, i mean when you export a .gm to .obj with
GM Viewer that is what makes the model screwed. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

Do you have the GM export plugin installed for Maya? (it's available on the FTP server). I'm pretty sure that's what it's designed to do, i.e., export GM files from Maya...

I've been trying to install Maya 5.0 so I could play around with it, but I can't get it to fire up. I get the loading screen, then the script editor opens and gives an error "can't find mainRenderer" or something similar to that and it stops there. I've looked all over the net and tried all the fixes suggested, and have even uninstalled and reinstalled several times. No luck...

Looks like I won't be much help with figuring anything out with Maya 5.0

If you mean from which sub-directory did I install, it was:

Maya5.0.zip\Alias WaveFront Maya 5.0\Maya\setup.exe

There are also two other sub-directories (which I <i>think</i> are installed if you choose the above file). I did not manually install anything from these directories.

Maya5.0.zip\Alias WaveFront Maya 5.0\Win32_M5en_US_Installer\
Maya5.0.zip\Alias WaveFront Maya 5.0\Win32_Maya50Docs_Installer\

Is there a trick to installing that I missed?

It's the graphic card problem. In my case installing earlier version of Radeon Omega Drivers (v2.5.67, to be exact) helped.

That's what I suspected. I have a new Nvidia gs7600 with the latest forceware drivers. Probably not gonna try and roll them back for Maya, since the newer drivers did fix several other problems. I think the graphics driver problem(s) might have to do with the implementation of OpenGL 1.1 with Maya - and how the drivers handle that function. I saw that mentioned on a handful of sites when I looked for a fix.

Thanks for the heads up...

Just reposting this post of Kazeite's here as well, because I think it's pretty relevant:

<!--quoteo(post=218547:date=Oct 22 2007, 08:35 PM:name=Kazeite)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Kazeite @ Oct 22 2007, 08:35 PM) </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec--><!--quoteo(post=218485:date=Oct 22 2007, 03:28 AM:name=Petros)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Petros @ Oct 22 2007, 03:28 AM) </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->I don't see any way to import or export gm in Maya 5 with that plug-in.

I remember years ago, it was said that the plug-in only worked with Maya 4.5 and no other version.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
True, but this particular plugin is Maya 5 version. If you try to use Maya 4.5 plugins with Maya 5.0, it won't allow to load them, stating that they're obsolete.

To export ship to .gm format, you first need to enable plugins, then set entire scene properly, and then use <i>SD2GeoExport</i> format. The whole process is outlined <a href="http://forum.bestgamer.ru/showthread.php?t=984" target="_blank">in this particular thread</a> (which, unfortunately, is in russian, deals mostly with buildings, and isn't detailed enough anyway <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" /> )
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

i had the same problem exporting my ship. soon as i tried to export it to something else it went screwy and i messed up my save file. What is the difference between maya 4.5 and 5.0? if the changes arn't that significant, why don't we just use 4.5 so we can import/ export correctly seeing that we have the plugins for that.

Because, as far as I know, nobody has Maya 4.5 and we DO have Maya 5.0 with the Maya 5.0 version of the plugin.

oh, sorry i miss read the post. i thought it was the other way around cuz i've been emailing a couple of people that were having problems getting maya 5 to load correctly.

Ok i managed to export obj to gm in maya <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/danse1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dance" border="0" alt="danse1.gif" /> ..i choosed rey (".") thingy at exporting menu and put .gm at end of the file's name BUT maya seems to be saving things its way (screwed model data) and that model is unreadable for
GM Viewer/Inez TOOL <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

To Kevin: Enabling the plugin? what do you mean exactly? and how? because i looked into maya and it has no such a place called
"enable plugin". <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="<_<" border="0" alt="dry.gif" />

<!--quoteo(post=218788:date=Oct 24 2007, 02:56 PM:name=Cylon13)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Cylon13 @ Oct 24 2007, 02:56 PM) </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->To Kevin: Enabling the plugin? what do you mean exactly? and how? because i looked into maya and it has no such a place called "enable plugin". <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dry.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="<_<" border="0" alt="dry.gif" /><!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I think you might want to direct this to Kazeite (from Pieter's quoted post #12 above). I never said anything about "enable plugin", since I haven't been able to get Maya 5 to work.

DOUH! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" /> ..my mistake sorry. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/danse1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dance" border="0" alt="danse1.gif" />

<img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> Till he gets here, let me respond.

1. Open Maya, then in the top menu bar select Window.
2. Under the Window menu select Settings\Preferences (should be the 5th item down)
3. Under the Settings\Preferences menu select Plug-in Manager (should be the last item)

4. In Plug-in Manager you see a list of Plug-ins on your computer and you can select (check box) the ones you want Maya to always load (auto load) and those to load just for this session (loaded)
5. Check the SD2GeoExport.mll

That is as far as I go as I still don't see any way to "import" gm, don't know anything about actually using the program to model, and am busy testing Build13 and trying to have fun <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sailr.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":sail" border="0" alt="sailr.gif" />

Do you mean "import" or "export"? As far as I know it is supposed to be an "export" plugin only.
