Hi fellow swabs,

Never played the original but I understand what all the fuss is now about. Great game but have a few questions...

1. How do you take over towns? I have the following evil plan and wonder if its going to work. I've built up about 50,000 loot and don't want to share it with my crew so my plan is to sacrifice most or even all of them in a take over the town bid but cannot seem to do this. I was also wondering if this plan will work. Will a new bunch of crew members dillute the unhappy feeling among the remaining crew members.

2. What benefit is there to being a friend of the indians? and also to the other pirates?

3. Is there a way to make the game more difficult. As much as I enjoy the sea battles I find that none of the them are particularly challenging?

4. Is there any advantage to sinking a ship rather than capturing it? E.g. does it increase your fame more. It just seems to me its so much easier and cheaper to ram the ship, and beat the guy at fencing than to take damage while pounding their ship. Also you get their cargo this way.

5. When you do hit a ship sometimes it drops loot or crew which you can pick up but only if you get to it before the fight is over. Or does your ship automatically pick up all loot once you sink the enemy ship?

Thanks in advance for any help that anyone can provide.

Dude, thats a lot of questions

I myself hardly ever read the manual that comes with the game but I have found out that even as an old pirates player, there are some new things in game. Your question about Indians and other Pirates is a good one and to be honest have not looked up in the manual, come to think about it I don't recall seeing anything on this topic in the manual at first glance. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" />

I suggest you take some time to read the whole manual as I suspect you may find 90% of your answers in there, if nothing is in there, then mabye the forum can help you (as we all tend to work together here and try to work out what might have been left out in manual) <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Hope that helps <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

Cheers <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

dude, have asked for you, lets see what happens?

Arghhh!!!! ya swab <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

Cheers <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I had ALL your questions answered, and for some odd reason my internet connection (DSL!) quit - so I lost it because I DOH <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" /> forgot to save my text before I rebooted to get online... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> So here we go again... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

1.) Your plan for taking over the town will not work unless you have enough men. If your men are testy with you already, it's because you've been at sea with them for a long period of time, and haven't yet divided the plunder. Hiring more men may be difficult when your existing crew is unhappy, and even if you do hire more crew, it shouldn't "dilute" their feelings...

2.) Being on good terms with the pirates will get you this - if you talk to the pirate captain in any pirate hideout, he might offer to send his men out to "soften" up a city so you can later go in and sack it easier.

I think this also happens with the Indians, but I haven't played it yet myself. The Indians are usually pretty hostile to ANYONE who is not a native, so you'd have to be a pretty dastardly fellow to be accepted by them.

3.) You CAN make the game more difficult `IN-GAME` by dividing the plunder after amassing a large amount of money. Your crew will be happy at the cut, and you will be offered a chance to upgrade the difficulty of your game and continue playing on a higher level. This is the only way to change this `IN-GAME`. At the onset of your next new game, you will be able to choose your preferred era and difficulty level.

Note that if you divide the plunder when you have little money, you may be asked if you wish to downgrade your difficulty level (if possible).

The different difficulty levels are Apprentice, Journeyman, Adventurer, Rogue, and Swashbuckler, swash being the highest and most difficult.

4.) I play that way, ramming a ship to board it rather than sinking it. Sinking shouldn't give you any more advantage over boarding a ship - but boarding is better because you WILL be able to take not only the ship, but the cargo and perhaps men or specialists. Sinking or boarding will add to your overall ship score, but a successful boarding will add to your gold.

5.) You can pick up survivors or cargo in the water during a sea battle, yes, but once you've boarded, that's it, you won't be taken back to a screen where you can get the flotsam and jetsam... I don't think whatever you get from the ship after you've successfully taken her includes what is in the water.

Hope this helps! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Thanks. Looks like I'll have to share the plunder after all. But its MY plunder. All of it. Mine mine mine! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":c" border="0" alt="mad.gif" />

Actually, it's your MEN's plunder. They're the ones who sweat reloading cannons over and over, man almost the entire ship keeping it fit. You're just a skinny guy who tells them when to do those things. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

You only own a set percentage of the net amount of gold you have per voyage. However, your share increases as you increase the difficulty, up to a whooping 50% of the total gold. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

Yeah, your share is a percentage, so 20% of your total is the same even if you only have 8 crew left when you divide. Funny thing is, in that scenario, your men might actually make more than you <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

In case anyone was going to ask the benefits of that, the bigger share your crew gets the more will want to join you on your next sail <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

I don't see why it shouldn't work. If his men are unhappy already I guess he has >100, else it's not easy getting them below content. So he should have enough to attack any town he likes. The reason he couldn't do so might've been because he tried to attack a rather firendly town and didn't go there by land or didn't fire his cannons a couple of times before getting there by sea.

Anyway, reducing the numbers of an unhappy crew wil indeed cheer the remaining members up and you can do that by attacking some town and sacrificing some of your men. Ideally you'd still try to capture the town (maybe by sneaking some unit to the town gates), so you would have loot AND a reduced crew -> they'll be content at the very least, more probably happy.

It should be noted though that adding large numbers of new crewmembers afterwards will get them unhappy again pretty fast. The newcomers don't dillute the bad feelings.

Fact of the matter, newcomers might sharpen the situation, for after recruiting, there are more men, but no more gold, resulting in less gold for everyone except yourself (the Captain´s share is calculated from the whole amount, the crew gets what´s left after the officers took their pieces).
