Hi all, I am going to give a very brief review of this game.
First, let me tell you that I've never played the original version; so `would-be` buyers who want to listen to someone who never play the orginal you find the right person here.
I find the game very interesting, though not as good as those who have played the original thought it would be, yet still a very good game. And I am not even a pirate fan.
I'll get to all the negative aspects of the game and explain them a bit, for I believe all of you have heard enough good things from everyone else here.
Is the game repetitive? Yes! The game is most repetitive when it comes down to little details. You'll find yourself fencing in only 2 different background during ship battles. You'll find yourself fighting the same bad guy over and over again. The Atari didn't even bother to make randomized names. And every time you when the fight, you display the same victory dance over and over again. Well...these are the aspects of the game that we modern gamers feel the most awkward to, while original pirates players will be imagining that they still live in the 1980s.
The good news is that the game is definitely fun when you ignore the little details and instead look at the big picture. You have much freedom to do almost anything you want, in your own style. A little imagination is definitely required for you to ignore the repetitive details. Like when I am fighting the same bad guy over and over again I would think that he's just a freaking a$$hole who keeps reviving every time I throw him into the water; stuff like these will motivate you to hunt him down. And it's actually fun too.
The game is the most fun when you are thinking what to do next then thinking what kind of character you want to play. DO NOT PLAY THIS GAME LIKE AN RPG, because you'd need lots of imagination if you wanna do that. SIMPLY PLAY IT AS A GAME, then you'll find yourself enjoying everything.
I know I am making excuses for my 50 bucks, but wait until you try the game. The game will make you to make all kinds of excuses but you'll do it with enthusiasm. It's the game to play after a long day at work/school or whenever you are just tired. I have Rome: Total War and Halo, but after having 2 exams in school last night, I came home to play Pirates. And it's really fun.
