New Horizons: Uncharted Waters 2

Just got the PC version of it <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> I have been playing the snes version for around 5 years now. PC version has better graphics, and much better interface. Loving it so far. Apparently It has no sound though lol I have been playing the mp3's from the sea dogs 2 website in the back ground on shuffle/repeat, and I don't even notice the lack of sound at all <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Any one else still play this game? Who do you like to play as? I typically play as Otto or Catalina, but this time around I am playing the Turk merchant.

This game is the best sailing/pirate/merchant/explorer strategy/adeventre/rpg thingy in existence, Pirates! and PoTC would be alot better off if they had half of this games gameplay mechanics.

EDIT: <a href="http://uwnh.freeservers.com/" target="_blank">http://uwnh.freeservers.com/</a> There is a great site with a bunch of info on the game.

I quite agree, I can't tell you how much time I invested in playing this game, and on my SNES as well! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" /> I haven't seen the PC version of it, but if I do I'll probably give it a try.
I played all of the characters at least once, but I would usually play Otto with his first mate Matthew. (burp <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/piratesing.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock" border="0" alt="piratesing.gif" /> )
Based only on the SNES version, I can see why some people would have a hard time getting into this game because the graphics were a little cutesy, like walking in the towns and the swordfights, but overall the game is so consuming, I was able to discover the Northwest Passage by the way, it seems a shame that not more people found their way into it.
Catalina the Pirate is also a big fan of this game and she will probably be along shortly and the three of us, and anyone who cares to, can discuss this great game.

I've loved this game since I had the original Uncharted Waters on the NES system - the upgrade UWNH is wonderful, and I STILL play BOTH of these...

I usually play as Catalina or Ali - tho sometimes I play as Joao... I think I enjoy playing as Ali the most (does that surprise you?).

My nick is not, as you might erroneously surmise, because of this game character, tho the game character is based on the person I got my nick from...

Here's my article about her - <a href="http://www.piratesahoy.net/content/view/52/34/" target="_blank">http://www.piratesahoy.net/content/view/52/34/</a> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

I find it amazing that this game, from so long ago, should have been soooo DEEP - you could sail around the world, visit ports and buy or find items, influence world economy with trading and investing, discover interesting places and find amazing animals &tc... AND it seemed to be endless!!!

This game is a MAJOR `time-stealer`. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

I have the UW game on NES and PC, and the UWNH game on the PC... Have not yet played the SNES version of either, tho I'm getting the UWNH SNES version very soon. BOTH pop up from time on eBay, and are considered HIGHLY collectable, valuable, and rare.

It is too bad that KOEI decided not to develop for an `English-speaking` audience with their subsequent versions of this wonderful game, tho they are presumably releasing a MMORPG of the game (in it's 6th incarnation, I believe) - Here's an IGN news item on it.

<a href="http://pc.ign.com/articles/506/506880p1.html" target="_blank">http://pc.ign.com/articles/506/506880p1.html</a>

Looks nice, but there's absolutely NO mention of it on the KOEI website... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

I'm not an online gamer, tho I did see this demonstrated at E3 and was impressed - it still has the depth and global exploration, looks like a serious amount of work went into this... The question remains whether English will be a supported language IF this thing actually releases...

(note to Yellowbeard, I had to edit your post about downloading, sorry)

I love that game!

I still have it for the SNES and I spent sooo many weeks of my life, maybe months now playing all the story lines.

I do have to say, I like the turkish and spanish ones the best though....

I love that in your travles, you can rename towns you discover, like Cape Town, ect.

Its a very immersive game and it is one of the pillers of my gameing experence.

I will cry when my snes copy of the game stops working.....
That, and Chrontriger....=(

Da doc

One of the things that I used to enjoy in this game was; no matter how many gifts you gave them, or how many times you told them about the innumerable discoveries you had made, there were some waitresses that would never give you the time of day! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":c" border="0" alt="mad.gif" />

Another thing that caught my attention, in the Ali the merchant scenario, was that when my investment program of allying cities with Turkey really started paying off, I would get the message, "Don't you realize that you're helping an evil power take over the world?" or words to that effect... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> I don't remember ever getting a similar message playing any of the other imperial powers and that always struck me as being a little strange. Is it the same in the PC version of the game? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huhh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:k" border="0" alt="huhh.gif" />

The neatest thing about this game was loaning it to my young nephew, and him reporting back what a great game it was, his inclination is usually towards faster paced games, the kind he can beat his uncle at with his eyes closed, if the experience of playing this game prompts him towards pursuing a career as an historian, I will feel that I have done my avuncular duty. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" />

Heh. Ask anyone that knows me, UC2 is my favorite game of all time. Hands down. Not even the original Pirates! can compete with it in my eyes. I spent so much time playing that game that I pretty much know all the best trade routes by heart. I have so longed for another pirate game of such depth and scope as that one. Everytime I play it, I get a sense of pride when I finally manage to sail over to the Far East without any difficulty.

I too mostly play as Catalina or Ali. Funny thing is, I'll usually start those characters out as they were intended and then do a complete 180 with them. I haven't played the game in awhile, but the new Pirates! has put me in the mood for some serious world exploration. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Uncharted Waters 2: New Horizons is definitely one of the greatest sailing/trading/battling games ever! I discovered it a few years ago, and played it intensely on my SNES (emulator <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" /> ). I played as Otto and then the Portuguese explorer guy. It was a blast! There wasn't much pirating in it and the ship battles (`turn-based`) were somewhat difficult, but the one vs. one duels were quite cool (also `turn-based`).

It's definitely a game I'd recommend. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

I won the game with Joao Franco in SNES version. There is a very bizzarre money making scheme that get you rich in no time. Apparently there are two ports that sell/but gold. However, you must invest some money first before you can have this option. But once those ports got gold, you make money like no one had. So I can actually can finish Joao Franco very quickly.

I have a hazy recollection of a pretty lucrative trade route between Athens and Istanbul , where I recall that lead was a low priced commodity, and by taking it to Istanbul, which is not Constantinople anymore, <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> and selling the lead there, buying, Persian Rugs (?) and transporting them to either Athens or Alexandria, you could work your way up from your starting ship to a fleet of Galleasses.

It pays to buy the house a round when you show up in port, but the music they would play in the taverns, <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sick.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eww" border="0" alt="sick.gif" /> you would think they would serve something stronger to their patrons than tea or hot chocolate.

I liked how you could customise your ship for either trade or battle, and I can't tell you how happy I was when I found out you could buy a cat to keep the rats down. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Didn't know about that. I just used the save/load state function of the emulator to cheat during the blackjack games. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Playing dice is MUCH more lucrative than blackjack - you have two people to bet against, and can come away with 1000 every time you beat both of them! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Yes, that gold market thing was pretty good!

And the cool thing about playing Ali - if you go talk to that kindly lady at the inn when you're trying to get people to invest in your trading venture at the start of your game, if you refuse her money, she will GIVE you a cat - which is worth much more than the small sum of money she might give you otherwise...

Catalina's line is always pretty funny:

<img src="http://www.ganotherapyusa.com/extras/voc2.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

The gold/silver trading involved price index manipulation. You buy say 50 silver per lot in Genoa until the price index is 150%. Then go to Maderia (Southwest of Lisbon) and 50 silver per lot until price index is 50%. Then buy as much gold as you can in one lot. If you have left over silver, repeat until you get lowest price index and buy more gold. After that return to Genoa and sell the gold at one time. With the price index 150% you'll get 1500 gold per piece while you bought with only around 1000 gold. 500 per gold profit, wholla!!! Repeat this and you are riched.

Only problem is you must invest your money on Madeira first until gold is available. The more storage space you have the better to get more cargo.

I used to always fill up big ships with gold and then lay them up in towns near my home port - just in case I ever needed some extra cash, there they were! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

This is also handy in the Ali quest where you need a lot of $ near the end.

A couple of thoughts on PC/NES differences:

I first played UW on the NES (Nintendo) system, and enjoyed it thoroughly. I still have the game and the system, and once in a while I plug it in and sail around a bit... Enjoyable game on NES.

I just got it on SNES and the music was REALLY annoying, compared to the original version. The graphics were mildly better. I didn't get too deeply into it before I shut it off (too many other things to do to get drawn into the game now).

Does anyone here have both the SNES AND PC versions of UWNH? I wonder how they differ. I only have the PC version. I'm guessing the console graphics aren't all that great compared to the PC version? As evidenced by the screenshot I posted above, the PC version of the game has pretty nice graphics for what it is... I was just wondering if anyone can offer a comparison opinion?

I have both.

-The Snes version looks alot like a Dragon Warrior game. The music is very annoying, not sure what the PC music sounds like as my computer can't play it.

-Upon entrance of a building the PC version puts you in a dialog window, with floating portraits and text against a blue back ground, the Snes version lets you walk around the building (it is not that great).

-The PC version lets you play black jack and dice, the Snes Version only lets you play black jack.

- On character selection in the PC version, the character portraits are floating above their port of origin, in the Snes version they are not, they are arranged in two neat rows of three.

-On the PC all of your important information is always on the screen to the left and the right, on the Snes you have to bring it up by pressing a button and navigating an interface that will take around an hour to get used to.

-On the PC Fencing is done by selecing from 3 attacks, and 3 defenses. On Snes the same attack and defense moves are still in, but they take the form of cards of different values that you randomly draw.

There are probally more minute details I am missing, like a few trade good variations between the two. I have not noticed any dialog changes.

Thanks, Captain Yellowbeard! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> Very illuminating! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

I really like the PC version of UWNH. Sometimes I get into the game just to mess around with the dice portion. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

The trouble you are probably having with the sound on your UWNH PC game is that your sound card needs "legacy" drivers for the old style (dos) sound... Don't know what sound card you have, but I have a Yamaha that has legacy drivers - so I hear the music. It's nice... Some of it's annoying, but on the whole, it's okay.

The SNES version of UWNH is extremely collectible and goes for big $ on eBay... So does the SNES version of UW, AND the NES version of UW... They are considered some of the best games ever made for the Nintendo system... Interesting, hm? It's too bad KOEI did not continue to make subsequent versions of this series in English...

I am thoroughly intrigued by the UW Online to be released soon - hopefully in English... When I met the KOEI people at E3, it was difficult to get them to talk because few of the KOEI folks at (Los Angeles) E3 seemed to know much about the game. The ones who knew, did not have enough English to tell us a lot about it, and we didn't have enough Japanese. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/urgh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":urgh" border="0" alt="urgh.gif" /> Frustrating, as I really wanted to know more...

I DO believe the English version WILL happen - as KOEI has opened offices here in the USA... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" /> It's going to be a waiting game that I think will pay off big time... From what little I saw of it, the game sure looked nice...

When my brother moved out of the house, he needed a snes copy of UCW:NH so bad (after playing mine with me for a few years) that he traded in a library of 12 playstation games for it at the local video game trader. And he was lucky to get it too cuz the copy just came in that day, and the owner was going to put it on EBay after work.

And the dice game in the PC version if fantastic. It is a same its not in the Snes version, so that I could kick back on my bed and play it on TV.

Yellowbeard, you could try to use DOSBox to run New Horizons. It's a pretty decent DOS emulator, and makes some old games run quite well! It may also fix your sound problem. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I use DosBox to play UW (original NES ROM) on my computer, but it's just as well for me to play it on NES - I've had the game since it came out back in the early '90's. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

For the UW on SNES, losing the sound is no big deal, they really fell off when they used that cheezy `midi-sounding` electronic stuff; the original was better, IMO! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

That's great to hear that Koei has US offices, Lady Cat, I invested a large amount of time in "Genghis Khan" as well as Uncharted Waters on my NES. (I woke Lady Mings up at two in the morning with the noise I was making when I was finally able to take over the world on Gengis Khan. The best part about that game was that your retainers could, and would, turn on you, and you had to be really careful when you assigned them countries to rule.)

The SNES version of Ghengis Khan was a little disapointing, but UNNH was a vast improvement over the original, the music notwithstanding.

The thing I liked about both UnCharted Waters games was the journeying into the unknown, not knowing if you would be able to make it to where ever you were going, the breadth of the game was the biggest challenge to Pirates!, on my NES, as being my favorite game.
