New pirate on the sea

Ahoy mates!

I've had POTC for a long time now, I've played it for days and days in the past. I really like the game, it looks nice, it's in my opinion a really good pirate-game. THe only problem I had was the anoying landfights and awkward controls. Now I feel like playing again, but I was wondering if there was a mod that would enhance the game. I stumbled upon POTC Build(that's the name right?)via some google research. I've looked around in the forums a bit and I think this mod would be the one I'm looking for... The only problem I have is finding what the mod actually changes... Could someone please enlighten me, tell me what's your own experience with the mod or direct me to a guide which I then probably missed like a blind parrot.

Thanks guys, Yarr!

Welcome to the forum, fentarez! It keeps amazing me that even four years after the game's release, we're still getting new members. Of course it keeps amazing other people that four years after the game's release, we're all still working on modding it and making it better. I hope you'll have a good time here. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />

Check <a href="http://www.s31clan.com/privateftps/pietersmods/" target="_blank">Pieter's Pirate Page</a> and the Build <a href="http://potc.moddb.com" target="_blank">ModBP profile</a>. There is no real complete and proper feature list, but there's plenty information anyway. After installing the mod, be sure to check the new <i>buildinfo</i> subfolder in your game directory.

The Build mod is truly a tremendous improvement over the original game. Among the new features are many retextures of ships, locations and characters, new quests, improved interfaces, access to ship decks, improved cannon fire graphics, new islands and locations, random villagers in towns, treasure search quests, random events, such as mutinies, exploding powder magazines, ships surrending, parlay with enemy captains and much, much more. If you think the original game was good, this will blow you away. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

Oh... my... god....

That sounds awesome! Everything you named, especially treasure quests!
I'm going to check out Pieters Pirate Page right now.

If you found stock POTC land fights annoying, then you will still find them annoying now.

However, all the other changes to the game will more than make up for it!

Was more fond of seabattles anyway. I've just found this additional mod, Direct3D-Sailing or something. With this and the Build mod, this game will keep me going for hours again, sailing in 3D across the seas was another thing I really missed. Awesome, just awesome! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Install the DirectSail mod after installing Build 13. Should work. Be sure to read "Direct Sail.txt" file in the <i>buildinfo</i> subfolder after installation. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Ok I just started up the game, it says Build 13, update 3, that's correct right?

Anyhow, I have two little questions:
- Is it me, or can I strafe really fast?
- When you pick your character, what does the Apprentice/Adventuere/Swashbuckler/.... means? Difficulty? I'm not sure if it was in the original, but I'm a little confused. That's all!

Thanks again!

Yes.
<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Anyhow, I have two little questions:

Side stepping was not possible in the original.
It was modded into the game, but has two problems.
One is that your character doesn't have a side step animation, so he will just slide along.
The other is that you can side step right through walls, mountains, etc.
Actually, that might be a good (fun) thing.<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->- When you pick your character, what does the Apprentice/Adventuere/Swashbuckler/.... means? Difficulty?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

But don't worry. If you decide to change the difficulty after you start a game, you can do so in the In-game Options screen.

welcome, yes apprentice/adventuere ect are the difficulty, I just recently figured that out lol, if you have any other questions don't be afraid to ask

The mod definitely adds a great deal of content, and I like that the community is still active after four years, but there is one thing I have to say...

... what's with the really bad added English dialog? It's the same for the Super Mod. It's as if it was first written in a different language and then run through a translator. That stuff should be looked at first before being added. For me, at least, it really brings down the overall quality of the project. If I could, I'd go through and edit everything so it makes sense, as you can easily open and edit the dialog files, but damn that might take a long time.

If I could learn just how much work I'm looking at, perhaps even exactly what files there are to edit, I'd jump right in and get to work on that. That is, if anyone else supports this idea.

As a new player, though, I am having a hell of a time trying to friggin' get out of port at Oxbay. I raise a French flag, the port attacks me and sinks me instantly. I raise any other flag, and the pirates or the French attack me from their ships and sink me instantly. Advice? This is quite frustrating.

be a diffrent nation? if your jack sparrow and you pick the pirate flag you are in pirate cove or w/e its called

That's kind of a cheap solution, though. I had my heart set as playing as England, although I suppose I still could, except I'll just be starting out at a different port. There has to be a way to get out of Oxford port without being blown up, though. The vanilla game just had a cut scene, but the Build Mod changed it. I doubt they would have changed it so that it's impossible, but changing your flag doesn't seem to work.

Raise a Portuguese flag. Definitly your best option. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

As for the dialog: As far as I know, most of it is pretty good. Apart from some newly added quests, which I have been working on fixing. Do you have any specific examples of the bad dialog you're referring to?
If you also want to help, check out the PROGRAM\DIALOGS\English folder. The files in there can be edited with Notepad.

I'm glad that most of them are good. I just randomly opened a few of the dialog files, searching for new the dialog to see how well it was written, and came across that which I had described above. It was the same with the new dialog in Super Mod for Age of Pirates, which I quickly corrected. I'd be glad to go through the files for this mod, as well, and make corrections for upload. There are a huge amount of files, though, so if you could tell me which ones are the newly added quests, it would make the job a lot easier and quicker for me (there are a few spelling errors in the added dialog as you start a new game, so if you don't mind, I'll fix those, too). <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Try <a href="http://www.s31clan.com/privateftps/pietersmods/potc_downloads/build14/b14_alpha6_update2.zip" target="_blank">Alpha 6 Update 2</a>, to be installed on top of Alpha 6. That one should be pretty good. I think that one has got pretty much all dialogs fixed. Be sure to tell us if you find anything you think should be improved some further.

i think he might be talking about bartolomue's quests. those used to have pretty bad spelling.

Yes, those were pretty bad. But I rewrote those and they're good now. Except the First Contact quest which I have not finished my work on and the Silver Train quest which I have not yet started on. But these are not in Alpha 6.

B14 A7 includes the updates from B14 A6 Update 2, correct? If that was in response to my comment about having recent run-time errors with A7, it's because I forgot to install the missing files you uploaded. I just remembered that I hadn't done that, which probably explains the error message, and so I edited my post. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Anyways, I was browsing through the dialog files with A7 at the time, so I know there are still some mangled quests in there. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" /> I need to get a few hours of sleep, but when I wake up I'll go through everything and correct what I find. I'll post the new file(s) either in here or in a new thread.

Can I make a suggestion, or observation, though? In Oxford at the port, it looks like there was an added outpost. It's positioned a little ways out in the water, and it's a small, block-like tower fortress. It looks very much out of place, as the textures are this bland, repeated gray (no offense to whoever textured it!). I know it's not a big deal, but it's kind of visually jarring in comparison to the rest of the environment. Perhaps someone could apply a new texture to it at some point.

i agree. it's the same thing in antigua. the adding buildings aren't bad, but they look too bland and faultless.
