While testing the game, I did the part of the main quest where you have to escort the ship full of English troops over to Greenford to the cave... Looking at the model used for Ewan Glover (same as for Nigel Blythe), I got <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" /> an IDEA <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" /> to change the skin a bit...

So I fired up Photoshop and did a little fiddling...

Didn't do much, just some color changes and a couple of facial things -

As I look at it now, the trousers are a bit too vivid... I should probably tone them down some... But I thought he could use a bit of a changeup...

Whaddaya think? I wanted him to look a bit more like a ruffian... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Arghh, it be Ol' Styl'in Nigel! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/diomed.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dio" border="0" alt="diomed.gif" />

Looking good, Lady Cat! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Nice, although it would need, as you say, darker trousers! Lookin good! Like the discreet scar! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

As I look at it now, the trousers are a bit too vivid...  I should probably tone them down some...  But I thought he could use a bit of a changeup...

Whaddaya think?  I wanted him to look a bit more like a ruffian...   <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />
I like it!!!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

I did think the same thing on the pants.
Perhaps returning them to the original brown would do.

But like I said, I like it!
I would definitely use that skin for the main character! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I think I might make him a little darker, too. I like the hair but I want him a little more swarthy. And now that I look at him, I wanted to change his eye color too. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Glad you like, I was aiming for a more piratey feel / main character type.

Looks nice, but he does not look common anymore, so you can't have more of one of him in your crew.....

Must be because I made his nose thinner. Heh.

I still have to work on him some more, time is getting scarce these days, tho...

I have a couple of other "new pirates" I'd like to eventually put into the game... Everyone is so drab; I'd like to see a bit more color in clothing... Naturally, it can't be VIVID like that blue in his pants there, but even with the vegetable dyes from back then, you can get some very nice colors...

Very Nice.
You look like you know what you are doing any chance you could direct me on how to make my female officers portraits look like the ladies they are instead of the guy in the red robe?

<!--`QuoteBegin-Seth`+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Seth)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Very Nice.
Thanks. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blush.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:ops" border="0" alt="blush.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />
<!--`QuoteBegin-Seth`+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Seth)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin-->You look like you know what you are doing
Heh, depends on who you ask! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />
<!--`QuoteBegin-Seth`+--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Seth)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--QuoteEBegin--> any chance you could direct me on how to make my female officers portraits look like the ladies they are instead of the guy in the red robe?
Sure, no problem! You need to do several things to get those portraits to change. I think the "red robe" guy is a default.

This is what you need to change:

Pirates of the CaribbeanPROGRAMQUESTSfacemaker.c
<span style='color:red'>You will need to add a new entry for each different face</span>

Pirates of the CaribbeanRESOURCETexturesINTERFACESPORTRAITS
<span style='color:red'>You will need to provide a portrait for each different face, in each size (64, 128, 256) named to correspond to the numerical entry you made in facemaker.c</span>

Also, you will need to "reinit" once you have done this, by hitting the *I* key when you open the game again.

NOTE that if you DO install the new build (or anything else) over your original facemaker file, you may have to change the tempmodelnum/portrait numbers because others have designed characters that may end up overwriting yours... KEEP COPIES of everything you change or have created, just in case you need to do a little "repair work". <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

<b>@Jason:</b>Yes, black would be good. I'm not sure where I'm taking this guy yet, but he might be my date at the next Douwesen waterfall party, LOL! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":woot" border="0" alt="w00t.gif" />

Hello Cat that is very helpful but what I am trying to find is when you talk to a person it shows their picture in the left upper corner. I am trying to find where those pictures come from so I can use them to make the pictures for RESOURCETexturesINTERFACESPORTRAITS and PROGRAMQUESTSfacemaker.c If that makes sense <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Ah! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

Well, one way is to take the character somewhere in the game that you'd like to have in the background of the pic - the 256 pic is the one that shows as your portrait - and take a screenshot. Depending upon the character you might want a ship background, or a town background, whatever you wish... Only thing is, you will still need to isolate the character pic for the smaller portraits, and that is a PITA with the lasso tool unless you like that sort of thing. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

The way I usually do it is this - open up the model in GMView and look at the full model (not the head only) - and take a screenshot using "PrtScr" (Print Screen). That puts an image of your screen on the clipboard, and you can create a "New" window for Photoshop (use the default size) and paste the clipboard image into it.

Once you get that image, you can crop it so that you have the part of the character you want to use for the pic - in GMView you can angle it so the character is looking right or left if you wish - crop to the head and shoulders or `mid-chest`, and use the magic lasso to eliminate the gray area around the pic.

Get a screenshot from PotC - F8 will make as many pics as you hit the button, and save them in the PotC directory as .tga images.

Find the area you want for the background of the portrait, size it right, paste a copy of your character pic into it, put a dark outer glow layer effect around him/her (see some of the other 256 portraits for an example), then flatten and size it to 256.

Open another portrait - any one will do - and use the rubberstamp (clone) tool to get rid of the person in the portrait and make it so that there is nothing but the frame and the background, then paste your pic into it (resize using Edit/Transform/Size if necessary). Once you have the 128 you can reduce it for the 64.

Don't forget to sharpen from time to time when needed, it'll make your portraits look better. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Hope this helps! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Seth: the problem is, it doesn't show their picture in the upper left, it shows their _head model_. So again you need to take a screenshot, not somehow find an already done image. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />
