Pirates' movies

Time to revive an old thread in order to mention an old TV series. The Buccaneers. As a digital TV channel here which specialises in old films and series has been showing the series for a while, I've recorded some episodes and started watching them.

Not to be confused with any films about a single buccaneer, this 1956 series stars a rather young Robert Shaw as Captain Dan Tempest. It shares producers, directors and authors with several other series of the time, such as "The Adventures of Robin Hood" and "William Tell", and they weren't all that historically accurate either. Still, it looks amusing enough.

Lucky you!
I wouldn't mind seeing that! :shock

That sounds really fun, actually.
Those other series you mention too!

Good discussion on pirate movies here too:
I hadn't yet heard of:

The King's Pirate
Double Crossbones
The Pirate (Gene Kelly & Judy Garland)
Kidnapped
Pirates of Penzance (Kevin Kline)

Even @modernknight1 himself pitches in for this Facebook discussion!

Also in another group:

"Kidnapped" is presumably based on the book by Robert Louis Stevenson. There might be some action on sailing ships but calling it a pirate movie is stretching the definition quite a bit! In any case, IMDB shows several films titled "Kidnapped" and only a couple of them are based on the book; the others are more modern and have nothing to do with piracy.

IMDB shows two versions of "The Pirates of Penzance" with Kevin Kline:
Some, but not all, of the cast from the 1980 version are also in the 1983 version, including Kevin Kline. The original is the Gilbert & Sullivan opera.

Looking back through this thread, the 1983 one has already been mentioned:

"The King's Pirate" is apparently a remake of the older Errol Flynn film "Against All Flags". And that, in turn, reminds me of "Under Ten Flags", which admittedly was set in WW2, but then so is "Down Periscope", which was mentioned earlier in the thread and added to the list. "Under Ten Flags" is based loosely on the activities of a commerce raider - named Atlantis. :D

I don't remember everything..

set in WW2, but then so is "Down Periscope"
Down Periscope does feature a WWII sub, but isn't set in that period. It was set in present day 1990's.
The US Navy already has their fleet of nuclear submarines.
At some point our hero ship hoists a pirate flag though and the communications officer remains in pirate outfit for the entire rest of the movie after.

Oooh?!!

Neither do I. Having been attracted to this thread by recent activity, I then went to the beginning to look at the whole lot.

Doh! Should have looked it up - I simply guessed that it was related to "Up Periscope", which was WW2. But that just puts it even further away from the usual time period of pirate films. ;)

As for "Under Ten Flags":
Under Ten Flags (1960) ⭐ 6.5 | Drama, War
There's a nice use of the "Master of Disguise" perk early in the film. xD

Like the hero you are!

Technically true.
But it's a fun film, so that's okay with me.
