Pistol crashing problem

Luwinkle

Landlubber
Gahhh. I have two different saved games, one guy with a single pistol, and another with a brace of pistols. Whenever I go into a duel, it crashes. Crashes as in makes my computer restart. Annoys me that I can't use pistols because PISTOLS RULE, anyway, anyone have any idea to help? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/guns.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":2guns" border="0" alt="guns.gif" />

Luwinkle, I get EXACTLY the same problem. Computer does a hard reboot.

My details:

OS: Win2k
CPU: Athlon 2800+
Video: ATI Radeon 9800 XT
Audio: SB Audigy Gamer

Windows is `up-to`-date, and I am using the current Catalyst drivers.

i have the same prob...do u both have 1gb ram or more?

p4 2,4, 1024 ram, SB Audigy,Sapphire x800pro,win2k prof.

I can confirm this, Luwinkle.
The only crashes I have are sprecifically when entering a duel. Having no pistols: no problem. With pistols: crash.
System: pristine W2k SP4, Radeon 9800 Pro, Soundblaster Live Player 5.1, latest drivers for all hardware.

Exactly the same problem:

Athlon XP 2600
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
Audigy 2 ZS Platinum

With all the latest drivers.

hmmm...i think the problem is with Soundblaster...3 of us have an audigy and the other has a live player...i bet its a soundcrash!

i have had a STP: error not related with pirates and had to recover the system...Pirates was still available and running most other games did not work after recovery anymore because the registry has been resettet...Pirates worked until that DUELL with pistols...
i have been reinstalling it and did not purchase the pistols..but i know it has been working well before...so its definately a sound or direct x problem...the crash has been starting right after the shot sound and it did reboot the whole PC

i have no soundblaster, using logitech usb headphones, there has been no crash with that one..crash occured after corrupted files...like i`ve said..
I suggest

a) first reinstall direct X and your newest sounddrivers
B) reinstall Pirates

me too

W2k
athlon 1700+
512 MB RAM
RADEON 9600 PRO (at first with catalyst, then `DNA-drier` and at last omega)

tried various systems settings for graphics and audio - nothing works!
Just crashes when using pistols...

Regards,
Daniel

Forgot to say

soundblaster 5.1 digital (like the player 1024 just with 5.1)

I also have the same crash.

Clean install and format of Win2k Pro
AMD 3200+ 64bit
Radeon 9800 Pro with latest drivers.

I've tried it with my Soundblaster and then I removed the card to use my onboard AC97 Soundcard but it still crashes. The game runs fine even at max settings until somebody shoots a pistol. I've reinstalled the game even removed all entries to the game in the registry. Reinstall of DirectX, latest video and sound drivers and still it reboots <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":c" border="0" alt="mad.gif" />

Alright Mates I think I found a fix. I used the ATI Catalyst 4.10 drivers and now it runs fine. I used the 4.12 (newest) than the 4.11 and it still crashed. I went back to 4.10 and it now works. I tested the Omega 4.10 and the ATI 4.10 & 4.10 Beta drivers and it worked. So you might want to give it a go.
Here are some links

Omega Driver Users get the Omega Drivers 2.5.14(Catalyst 4.1) here

ATI driver users go here for Win2k Drivers

Win XP users go here

Hope it works for you guys as well

hmmm....then it seems to be a problem with this new A.I. feature, i think it is included since Cat.4.11

can anyone else confirm it´s working with Cat.4.10? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p:" border="0" alt="pirate2.gif" />

Yep, it works at Cat.4.10 without any crashes or other problems, i played for hours and many `pistol-shots`. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

but the game runs slower, i think 30fps locked.

Hmm...just seen that ATI now has Cat 4.12 as current drivers.
Anyome knows if the 4.12 have this issue?

OK, just tested the new 4.12, same problem.

4.10 -> OK
4.11 and 4.12 -> crash

Unfortunately the old 4.10 seems to have a framerate issue as already posted here by Soveso, but I can live with that.
Lets hope ATI and/or Fireaxis will fix this issue soon.

Sorry to say this but IMHO it seems this problem only affects people who run Windows 2000... I've noticed that anybody with Windows XP doesn't have this problem. Haven't tried it yet with Pirates! BUT I had a similar problem before with The Sims 2. I borrowed a friend's hard disk and copy of Windows XP and ran it off my computer with a clean install - no background programs just most recent hardware drivers. RESULT: Sims 2 ran fine with LATEST drivers. Ran the same thing on my own hard disk with Win2k Pro SP4... RESULT: Sims 2 rebooted the machine after about 15 minutes into the game with LATEST drivers. When I used 4.`8-4`.10 I didn't have the same problem... also with Pirates! this seems to be the case (although it *did* crash during a ship combat screen for some reason <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" /> ).

Now I want to say that AFTER The Sims 2 released their new patch I *WAS* able to play the game with the latest drivers (so perhaps Maxis inadvertently fixed the conflict between Win2k and the latest ATi drivers) - however I really hope that Firaxis does the same although this seems unlikely since they're now focusing development efforts on the `X-box` version <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />.

Same exact problem, but one pistol worked for me. Only using dual pistols/brace of pistols would cause the reboot. Tried it on two different computers. Seems to be ATI related since we all have ATI cards.

System specs:

System 1
----------
p4 2.8e
Albatron 865pe Pro 2
1GB Corsair XMS pc3200 DDR
Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro
Soundblaster Audigy EX Platinum
Win2k SP4 w/all the updates

System 2
-----------
p4 2.4a
MSI 845 PE Pro
1GB Corsair XMS PC2700 DDR
Sapphire Radeon 9600SE
Onboard sound
Win2k SP4 w/all the updates

Problem is - I've tried the last 8 revisions of the ATI driver on both machines and on the 2.8 I now get the black screen spinning wheel error, even when I reverted back to my old driver (???)

Also tried last 8 revisions on the 2.4 but I have the same problem (reboot while duelling with dual pistols)...

I've determined it has to be the ATI cards we're using, but changing drivers doesn't help me... Can anyone help with this? Thanks.
