Hi,

Ijust bought PotC, having enjoyed Sid Meiers Pirates and er.. played Tortuga. It all look great but it crashed the first time I played (well, the menus did) and my ship was sank the minute I went out to sea. So I thought I'd install the mod (without <i>any</i> experience of this kinda thing) and everythings changed more than I expected!
Anyway... long and short of it is should I start with just basic game and add mod later or is it good idea to have mod from start? Does anyone have any tips for settings that might make it easier to start out? Thanks in advanace for any help you can give. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Well, we here like the mod. However, I guess that goes without saying. Note, adding realistic elements and complexity has been our MO here. If you are looking for a computer game, the most recent mod (post-build-12) turns the sailing portion into more of a wood ship simulator - and the next few versions may be even more dramatic. If you're unfamiliar with game mods, you may have bit off more than you can chew.

If you have specific questions after reading all of the confusing "readme" files, somebody will try to help. However, "is it better" ... uh, better at doing what? Keeping playability over long term? Keeping thinking adults playing the game? Attracting arcade fand and joystick jockeys? You get the idea.

Personally, I would recommend playing the stock game for a while. Then, once you are fed up with it (the stock game can be quite dull), get the mod and prepare to be impressed. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

I'd actually beg to differ from Pieter and suggest adding the Build12 mod at the very least (I don't know how stable the post-build stuff is as yet). Whilst the build makes the game harder in some respects you get more gameplay, fixed bugs Akella left in, better options for stuff and you can choose what to enable or not.

If the game really is too hard then with the build you can easily change a few things like give yourself a load of cash when starting so you can buy a decent ship and sword/pistol and hire some officers without going into debt with a loanshark (someone really needs to change loanshark to moneylender or monneyer in game..Loanshark is a rather modern expression I reckon) , and fiddle with any of the build's changes like the frequency of encountering muggers, robbers and bar fights. Anything you don't like...just turn off in the buildsettings file.
S'your choice but the modded game is so much better than the vanilla POTC.
