Please, help

Hey folks. I downloaded the main mod (pack 12,0) installed it and it sorta works. However, there are few things that I can't figure out how to do:
1) Mod character. With old program, I just went to character_init file and changed money, and starting ship to what I wanted. Doesn't seem to work now. Attempts to give him another ship caused the program to crash.
2) I downloaded bunch of stuff from FTP server, and there are several issues with them:
a) I have no idea where to install them
b) Some of it refferes to the items (Long cannons, muskets), that are not found anywhere else in the mods.
What am I to do? Where do I find those items? Thank you in advance. And please, forgive me my ignorance.

well the only one i know of is your character, go to buildsettings.h file and its all in there i believe, i havent played with the build 12 modpack in a while since i got pre build 13 but all the character editing you need is in there, your start level, money, name, character model, and ship..
