A friend and I have found that downgrading the graphics card drivers has worked. My friend has an ATI Radeon 9600 and I have a 9700 pro.
My full spec is:
Abit A7N
AMD Barton 2400+
1Gb DDR3200
ATI Radeon 9700 pro 128mb
win2ksp4
I was using catalyst 4.12, the latest offering from ATI. I was getting really nasty crashes that did a full reboot of my system. But I went to their old drivers page and got catalyst 4.10. Once installed, it hasn't crashed since. And the same goes for my friend.
Hope this helps.. this game is worth it - I've been playing pirates since the first version. SM has really captured the fun of that first version and added lots of new features to make it a more interesting and rounded game.
