Possible help for frequent crash sufferers.

I enjoy the mod but I was having major issues with crashing when entering the sailing portion of the game. It was getting so bad that I was about ready to just give up. My errors were always in sea_ai.dll (I might have .dll names wrong its from memory but you get the idea).

Now I recalled a crashing issue someone had with another game, which was solved by lowering the % hardware acceleration for sound. Ironically putting a little bit back on the processor seemed to stop the crashing (it worked for me too).

So in desperation I tried it with the graphics acceleration and took it down one notch before loading the mod. It seemed more stable but it did eventually crash, but this time it was in the dx8.dll (don't have the full dll name) instead of sea_ai. At least being different was encouraging.

So again I took it down another notch on the control panel and so far have been able to make the game crash. Now I only experimented for an hour or so but multiple sea/map/sea/map changes and no crash. I'd have almost guaranteed a crash prior.

My card is a factory overclocked 8800 GT (SLIed but the SLI is disabled for this game), and who knows what might be the issue, but if it works I'm happy. Being the game is so old there is absolutely no noticeable change in performance even with the lower graphics settings.

I did not know that you could change the graphics acceleration like the sound acceleration.

I do know that on this system turning things down or off in the control panel makes it run worse. Laggy and stuttery.

For me ctd's are now rare, but they used to happen a dozen a day. If you are still getting many ctd's even with patch 3, then, like I did, you may have issues with your video card. Could it be overheating? Or could your PSU be not delivering quite enough power to it? This puter came with an 8800GTS and ran well until I installed an GTX275. Eventually the PSU gave up from the overload, but since installing a more powerful one it has been running pretty well. PotC is the only one that had ctd issues, but the others picked up fps and IQ after the change. Hope this helps.

I can't say for sure what the issue is, but it runs still very smooth with the hardware acceleration turned down.

The only noticeable differences are sometimes there is a slightly green tint to the smoke, and a slight pause starting melee combat in large groups.

With Nvidia cards, green smoke can happen with 16 bit rendering as opposed to 32 bit rendering. I know 16 bit rendering is a DX7 thing. How did you do that?
