POTC just won't work

Hullo dar mateys,

I'm having a bit of a problem with POTC on my 32-bit Vista. Having not played the game for like a billion years I decided to reinstall it once again. With great anticipation I also installed the New Horizons. What happened next was I ran the game and at least 'til the first loading screen everything seemed alright. But when the game switched to fullscreen the screen went black and all I could hear was the first two seconds of the opening video -- and then the game crashed ("Storm Engine 2 not responding"). I tried to launch it a couple of times again but it didn't work.

I ran it as the administrator - didn't work.
I ran the game in compatibility mode for XP - didn't work.
I changed the desktop resolution to match the game resolution - didn't work.
I deleted both the mod and the game, reinstalled the game and tried to run it without the mod - didn't work.

What is the problem and is there a way to fix it? Is POTC even supposed to work on Vista? Please help me, I'm desperate. I thought Build 13 was pure awesomeness -- <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bow.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":bow" border="0" alt="bow.gif" /> -- and now I'm dying to get to play the New Horizons.

Certainly does work with Vista; what graphics card do you have?

it works on YOUR vista pieter, i told you like half a year ago it didnt work at mine either, luckely i still have my xp computer

but the old game DOES work on my vista

Don't install the game in the program files save it somewhere like C:\Games\POTC or something, I have Vista myself and the game works perfectly! Make sure you have the "Vista Codec Pack" because it could be a Video Compatibility error.
------------------------------------
Installation order:
1 - Install Build 13 Final (if you haven't done so already)
2 - Remove the PROGRAM, RESOURCE\INI and RESOURCE\MODELS\Locations\decks folders
3 - Extract the Build 14 Alpha 9 file on top of your game
4 - Allow it to overwrite all files it wants to
5 - After completion, run RunMe.bat
6 - Extract Build 14 Alpha 9 Full file on top of your game and allow it to overwrite all files it wants to
7 - Install Alpha 9.5, following the instructions in the installer and allow it to run RunMe.bat
8 - Start the game and reset the controls to default in the Options menu
9 - Tweak the controls and the game's settings to your liking in the Options menu
10 - After messing with the Advanced options at any time shut down the game engine and open it up!
12 - NEVER Mess with the ADVANCED Options while a game is loaded!!!
13 - Start a new game, select a storyline and ENJOY!

Tips:
- If you have Windows Vista, DON'T install the game to Program Files; security measures tend to prevent the modpack from installing correctly
- !!!SAVE OFTEN!!!
- Check out the controls in buildinfo\Default Key Assignments.txt
- The game tends not to work if:
. You have an Intel Onboard Graphics Card
. Sometimes if you have Nero Burning ROM installed (get a "debugger" error message)
. You use ffdshow and don't have the game added to your "exception list"

It's probably because some other reason: hardware issue or software incompatibility or something.

That can be found in the <a href="http://forum.piratesahoy.net//index.php?showtopic=13163" target="_blank">Build Mod Files</a> thread, of course, but how would we be able to put that information in a place where people with a similar problem might find it? People don't read the FAQ-sticky. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

Ah, darn it. How very silly of me. I should've read the FAQ before asking stupid questions.

Well... that particular information isn't IN the FAQ; it's in the Build Mod Files thread. I'd better put it in the FAQ soon though. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Make sure to note that I put in some extra helpful info in there with a few more steps. I just made sure everything is done correct so ppl can get the full experience...

You do need to do that when starting a new game after you had already played another game.

im having the same problem though it happens just after i launch it a c+++ error happens pls help

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library to be exact

im using XP S3

ichill nvidia gforce 8500GT

edit*

i want to feel the game first before downloading all of the build mods do i have to download all of them right away?

Did the game work before installing any mods? I gather from your PM that you installed Build 13.

yes it does and it does work when i use the config.exe and use save and play the game but im not sure if the mod works with it since i dont see any change at all

So stock PotC works and with Build 13 it doesn't? Are you sure you installed it correctly?
In any case, this thread should be of some assistance to you: <a href="http://forum.piratesahoy.net//index.php?showtopic=13163" target="_blank">http://forum.piratesahoy.net//index.php?showtopic=13163</a>
You just need Build 13 Final if you want a stablish game. Although the recent Build 14 Alpha versions are pretty good, they're still a work in progress.

yes i did and im using a klite codec pack is the problem lies there? since i dont know if i have a CCCP on my pc

Truth be told, I wouldn't know. If the stock game works and Build 13 Final is installed correctly, that should work too.
Anyway, enable error logging ( <a href="http://forum.piratesahoy.net//index.php?showtopic=9234" target="_blank">http://forum.piratesahoy.net//index.php?showtopic=9234</a> ) and see what you get in system.log, compile.log and the possible error.log.

yah i think i found a problem ill check it for now its with the midnight full cargo mod im gonna make a new install (or rather a new copy have a back up of my main POTC)
