Proof Experiment, Courting for Promotions

Finally tracked down a repeatable test of the assertion that the Happy Governor Daddy of the Daughter you are courting will give you promotions.

Take any good save game where you are `4-Duke` and have a ring or the necklace.

Sail off to any Plain Daughter that you have only danced with.
Sail into port. Talk to the Gov. Sail out of port.
Sail into port. Talk to the Gov. Sail out of port.
Sail into port. Talk to the Gov. Sail out of port.
Sail into port. Talk to the Gov. Sail out of port.
Sail into port. Talk to the Gov. Sail out of port. (The extra times are to clear any plausible time lag between events and rewards.)

Sail into port. Confirm in your ships log that there are no happy flags for any events since you first sailed into this port.
Visit the Gov and give the Plain Daughter the ring.
Sail out of port.
Sail back into port. `Re-confirm` your ships log for no happy flags.
Visit Gov. Get land.

QED.

If you can get land this way, then while climbing the social ladder, you can also get promotions for courting any daughter. The happier she gets, the happier the Gov gets. If He is very happy, you get advancement.

Hmmm, if I'm understanding correctly, I don't think this would work if you are only level 4--even if you make the daughter and hence the governor "happy" with the ring/necklace, wouldn't that just count toward your next promotion, rather than getting you land?

I have only got land from a governor (when I'm not already top rank) when I've done enough to earn a promotion AND done additional things to make them happy as well.

Iffen you get land, you are climbing the ladder.

The ladder has too many rungs to reliably display a change in rank.
Getting land means you are going up.

If this example reliably shows that you are climbing, then it also shows that you can use the same effect to acru promotions.
