Proposed "Sneaky Item Trader" mod - Opinions pleas

I'm changing his mustache, and I'm gonna try the "Stan" look. Heh. I was going to make him a peddler type anyhow, with patches & such all over his jacket - the plaid will be interesting to try to get to work on that nice coat...

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> Question is, which navy wears plaid uniform coats? The Scots? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Okay, Monkey Island fans... Of course Stan doesn't really wear plaid, it's a check. I fancied it up a bit...

<img src="http://www.ganotherapyusa.com/extras/stan2.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />
Changed the mustache too. What do you think of the scars?

<img src="http://www.ganotherapyusa.com/extras/stan1.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Lookin' good Lady Cat,

I think you should call him "Scraps" like in the Wizard of Oz, cause it looks like he made his coat from a patchwork quilt.

The scar reminds me of how the GI Joes that I played with when I was a little Buccanner always had a little scar on one cheek. Sort of like they were all graduates of the Heidelberg Fencing academy.

Obviously I'm going to have to locate some of these Monkey Island games so I can figure out what I'm missing here.

Hell no... does he have any old rope bridges in stock tho? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

He'll certainly stand out in a crowd, all the easier if he sells me something that isn't quite what he described it as so I can add to his scar collection.

I know it looks funny but I am not really sure I should keep that awful jacket. I'd like to make up a "real" Scraps - a nice coat like that with a lot of `real-looking` patches. I'm going to go for that next. He won't look as outlandish and clownish but he will look more plausable and not so jarring. He IS, as he stands, a parody of a parody... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

ScummVM is an emulator that lets you play the original Monkey Island games on modern PCs - don't bother trying to play them without it!

It's also available for Symbian - I finished both Monkey Island 1 and 2 on my P800 mobile phone earlier this year. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="8)" border="0" alt="cool.gif" />

Love the idea of a sneaky item trader. Reminds me of CMOT Dibbler from Discworld novels (Terry Pratchett)

He turns up wherever there is a crowd, usually selling suspicious "pig" sausages or pies that look good until you bite into them.

In one book a dragon is terrorising the city and he turns up selling "Dragon detection sticks".
When the stick burns through - you found your dragon!

Aye, Fred Bob cain't remember at de moment but he 'twas able tew play one of MI1 or MI2 widout usin' ScummVM on his XP machine! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

Hmmm, I have made this just one dialog for "all" (there are seven or eight instances of running into this guy) of the incarnations (he has different names, too, LOL) of my sneaky trader, but now I'm thinking that the potential for silly dialog - and more variety of dialog - can be reached only if I create different dialog files for each - or if not that, then at least two or three different dialog files instead of only one.

I love the "Dragon detection stick", that's funny... It's like the weather rock - hanging from a sign which reads, "If this rock is swaying, the weather is windy. If this rock is warm, the weather is sunny. If this rock is wet, the weather is rainy. If this rock is under water, we are experiencing extremely high tides or flooding..."

Haven't had much time lately to work on this guy but I fiddled about with a more "serious" jacket and even with rips and tears and patches and missing buttons, I'm not that happy with it. I think some kind of hybrid of the two should work - I just have to figure out what to do with it to make it more realistic looking without losing the sheer outrageousness of that awful check...

I played around with the face and gave him a broken nose, tho. Heh... Part of the dialog has Nathaniel saying, Yeah, right, you look like you got keelhauled by your last 'satisfied customer', and "Stan" (Harry, Henry, Peter, Piers, whatever his name is today) replies cheerfully that he wasn't keelhauled, it was a jealous suitor - "the ladies just love me, can't help it."

All in the `time-honored` tradition of the tinker or travelling salesman! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

How does the old joke go?

1.$50 bucks for this rock. It keeps tigers away.
2. Oh?
1, Do you see any tigers?
2. No.
1. See, $50 bucks,

This is turning into a fine addition Cat. Perhaps he could sell something he calls ""The weather gauge."

Of course, what would really be good is if the first time you spot him he's on an island (lets say Redmond) and he says his name is Harry. Then you spot him on Isla Muelle and he goes by Don Alejandro de la Escobar (or some Spanish sounding name). Nathan says, "haven't I seen you before somewhere?" To which he ofcourse replies, "nope." Things continue in this manner until you've seen him on all the islands.. each time his name is changing and he denies knowing you. Perhaps, different towns people can talk about him, asking if you've seen him, each time telling you a different tale of some swindling he's done.

I don't know, I just like the idea of someone constantly popping up and doing amazing things. As it stands ol' Nathanial seems to be the only one adventuring in the Archepelego. In Sea Dogs people would tell stories of the other great privateers out at sea. Sometimes you'd run into them later in the game, sometimes you wouldn't.

Heh, yes, <b>jmv575, </b>when you ask him "didn't you have a different name last time?" he says "oh you must have met my cousin." But that's good too, "Nope. Never met ya before."

Each of his names means tinker or salesman or something like that... And I've decided to be alliterative with the first name, so it's Piers Pettifogger, and Harry Higgler, Henry Huckster... That kind of thing... Added a "John Smith" for a laugh...

I can most certainly add him to people's conversations - that would be great, so you can talk to people and they'll say, "Have you seen that peddler? He's a thief and a terrible liar, but sometimes he has some great items... All the women love him." HA! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Here are some recent pix of what I've done to the jacket and face:

<img src="http://www.ganotherapyusa.com/extras/sneaky2.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /> <img src="http://www.ganotherapyusa.com/extras/sneaky3.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

I'm NOT finished with the jacket - I wanted to get a tear I made onto the front, but when I moved it, it was still on the back. Have to move it down the front of the jacket a little more to get it to show on the front, or maybe I'll put it off of one sleeve...

I wonder if it would be possible with the swindler to get some use out of the jails at either Redmond or Greenford. Possibly Nathaniel could turn the swindler in, and then talk to him while he is in one of the cells.

"Well Mr. Haney, maybe you'll think twice before you try to sell someone a reverse polarity lightning rod for installing on a warship with a line going to the powder room." <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

I have the dialog set up so that when Nathaniel has had wayyy too much in terms of "pitch" from this guy he can threaten to turn him in - and the guy will just "whoops, gotta go!" run away. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

It's not working *everywhere* yet, but I got it to work in Oxbay and it's FUNNY AS HECK when he runs and Nathaniel is left standing there saying, HEY!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Interesting, it doesn't work on most recent versions of windows for most people. Did you do anything special?

Did you play the games all the way through? They exhibit serious problems at certain points.

Of course nothing is as cool as playing them on your mobile or other OSs than they were released for! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" /> (Descendants of OSs they were released for don't count <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":blah:" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" /> )
