Putting the "fix" on Danielle...

CatalinaThePirate

Unholy Terror,
Storm Modder
<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> mateys!

I have been working on a "fix" for Danielle - so that after the main quest is over, you can dismiss her (you go your separate ways after dividing the reward for Silehard's defeat), or have her stay on in your crew - It will be your choice if she stays on - AND if she does, she can remain "immortal", or you can have her be "mortal"...

I'm also giving her the regular officer utilities dialog - so you will be able to ask about rations and change clothes ("I need to change my clothes, Danielle, wanna help me?" LOL!!!) and all that...

Been working on tweaking up the dialog and making things happen, just got a few more things to iron out and this will be ready to add to the next "new build" we are collecting mods for...

I had suspended work on my "sneaky trader" mod until I got this finished - once I have it nailed down, I'll get back to that and give you an updated report...

Just a sitrep... As you were... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

You are allways doing a great jop CAT <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

I see why you made this job a priority, cat, considering your avowed loathing of little Danielle...

Personally, -I- think someone might be a bit jealous over Nate's affections. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink.gif" />

Sounds good, is it working out alright? And stop with yer dirty remarks about Daniëlle! Makes me miss my girlfriend more and more <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />.

In the mean time I'm working on degrading swords, but it's giving me some trouble... will post about that in a new thread though <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />.

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock:" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" /> Man, you guys are really gluttons for punishment, I see! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Danielle messes up your rep and causes you to be thrown into prison, works against you trying to find Rheims, steals the final tablet before you get to it (and breaks it!!!), stabs you in the side, makes you fight some guys to save her life, doesn't trust you, suspects you of trying to hunt her down and kill her and so challenges you to a duel, and steals that orb in the temple which causes the whole thing to crash down around your heads!

Is this someone you actually enjoy? Her rash impulsiveness leads you to one disaster after another! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":blah:" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />

Granted, that orb helps you kill off the Black Pearl, but she COULD have waited until you found and secured the rest of the GOLD that's probably buried now under tons of rubble in that wrecked temple... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rolleyes:" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

The only one I have LESS patience for in this game is Nigel Blythe! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/diomed.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dio" border="0" alt="diomed.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Never fear, I don't treat her badly (the dialog I wrote is pretty good - and properly salty in places, if I do say so myself) - I just think she's more of a liability than an asset. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huhh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:k" border="0" alt="huhh.gif" />

Then again, every good story must have a thorn in its side... It's just that IMHO, she's not enough of a comic relief for me to be glad to see her DESPITE the disasters. At least Jack Sparrow had that... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

ATM I have her dialog and triggers nailed down (I think), and I'm now trying to work out why the officer dialog isn't triggering in the proper place. There's an error in the code somewhere (nothing I did, but a bug or residual "dead" dialog from the original game) that is causing a problem. Haven't had much time in the past few days to work on this, but I'll get it... Just have to stare at the code a little longer... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rolleyes:" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Yeah yeah, she's a brat. I hated when she stabbed me, but the first time I played I was a little excited because I _thought_ the game was going to make you play as her for a while.

Could this be done, in general? Not just change your outfit, but make you become a different character with a different (or no) ship and inventory for a little while, maybe to break your own main character out of prison or something? Going back to my favourite old SNES RPG, Earthbound, you did a lot of this, using different characters to help one another.

Speaking of dialog bugs, Cat, have you had a chance to restore B11 officer dialogs to your FBQ?

bah @ that orb, the first time i played i didn't use it <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> what does it even do anyway?

this is definitely a good idea, cat. it does spoil it a bit that you're stuck with her after the main quest (though she <i>is</i> immortal, and i have to admit i used her to get the treasure on douwesen hehe <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="^_^" border="0" alt="happy.gif" /> )

You BEAT the BP without using the orb, Kieron? Zounds! It's pretty anticlimactic to use it, really... it's a `one-time`-use ability that zaps the Pearl with cosmic light and takes its life down to a sliver, thus making it rediculously defeatable.

I cant get past the part of the temple where you enter the place with the big shiney statue and the orb, nothing happens!

And CAT, you don't like Nigel? Hes my second favorite officer (Clair Larousse being first)! he tried to kill his navigator for nothing for Gods Sake, how can you NOT like that?
-Capo

ugh, Clair Larousse... now there's a prick. He doesn't even COUNT as an officer, since he just tags around without DOING anything, even when you get in a fight. Last time I started a new game and saw him in the tavern, I just STABBED him so he couldn't mess things up for me again. No amount of gold is worth putting up with that French twat.

In that room of the temple, with the big shiny statue and the orb, you ought to just be able to step forward a bit, then Danielle puts her grubby hands on the orb and the whole place collapses.

erm, if you finish the quest Clair fights for you, he has good stats, he does. Too bad you only get 25000 gold from him...
But he's worth it in my opinion.

After de quest be o'er, Claire be a good one tew be assignin' as captain o' one o' yer ships! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

Eh, I always just stab him, take his ship and share of the gold after all the grief he puts me through.

I've never really noticed officers with "good stats" helping me out much, anyway. High melee skill is the only one that seems to make much difference.

I killed the Black Pearl without using the orb the first time, too, Kieron! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

Small update, I got everything working, and realized I probably should make it so that you drop Clement off at the lighthouse on your way to Redmond after the BP sinks... So... I'm going to add that too. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Wait, is Clement that old whitehaired fellow? I like him, I'd rather keep him. Whenever I see an officer in a tavern with his outfit, I hire him on the spot.

Maybe his dialog and his use in the game can also be expanded. Remember how he tells you about his inventions, and you respond that you don't want him fooling with your ship? We never get to SEE any of these inventions. I WANT my ship fooled with, if it gives it special guns or instruments or - gasp - turns it into a giant wooden Transformer! Hellz yeah!

Alan, that can be a MOD that you can write for him after Nathaniel and Danielle drop him back off at his lighthouse home... By "freeing" him, he can then be used in a new quest at some point... That's one of the drawbacks about keeping Danielle on as an officer, you cease to have her be available as a character for any new mods.

BTW, Clement has terrible shipboard stats, the only thing he is good for is REPAIR, he does not qualify to even collect points for the other skills...

I see, good idea.

And yeah, I hate all the characters who can't even `level-up`. Blah. Like that Sabine Matton or whoever girl, with all 0's. She deserves to be put into combat anyway, just on the merits of her complete uselessness.

oooooh cool idea, there could be an `extra-special` sort of shop if you go to the lighthouse after the main quest, with unique weapons and items... a new sort of spyglass maybe...

A new sort of spyglass... that shoots lasers, Kieron? ;^)

And maybe a shop, or maybe you can get his stuff after doing some favours for him. I'll see about opening that building attached to his lighthouse, since the lighthouse itself doesn't have the room. I always check that door anyway, _just in case_ it unlocked itself at some point in the game.

Can you make one inside location link to another, like different rooms in a house?

And as for the items, since I'm already making a curiosities shop for weird new weapons and trinkets, Clement's would have to be more realistic and scientific. Navigation aids, special types of guns, that sort of thing. I don't suppose he'd double up on or clash too much with Quentin Basil Narborough...

Here's what I have so far, the code for opening the door to the shack attached to the lighthouse, and putting inside it one of the shipyard interiors, the real messy one, which I'll edit later to look more like an inventor's workshop.

In LOCATIONS/INIT/oxbay.c, find near the end where it lists reloads for Oxbay Canyon, the sea and the lighthouse interior (this general area is the lighthouse beach), and add this:

Locations[n].reload.l5.name = "reload2";
Locations[n].reload.l5.go = "Lab";
Locations[n].reload.l5.emerge = "reload1";
Locations[n].reload.l5.autoreload = "0";
Locations[n].reload.l5.label = "Clement's Lab.";

Next add the lab itself, wherever other interiors are listed.

// -------------------------------------------------
Locations[n].id = "Lab";
locations[n].label = "Lab";
Locations[n].filespath.models = "locationsinsideLaboratory";
Locations[n].image = "loadinghouse_03.tga";
//Sound
locations[n].type = "house";
//Models
//Always
Locations[n].models.always.locators = "lab_l";
Locations[n].models.always.house = "lab";
//Locations[n].models.always.env = "smallhome_FF_02_env";
Locations[n].models.always.window = "lab_w";
Locations[n].models.always.window.tech = "LocationWindows";
Locations[n].models.always.window.level = 50;
//Day
Locations[n].models.day.charactersPatch = "Sh03_p";

//Night
Locations[n].models.night.charactersPatch = "Sh03_p";

//Environment
Locations[n].environment.weather = "false";
Locations[n].environment.sea = "false";
Locations[n].models.back = "backgrsh3_";
//Reload map
Locations[n].reload.l1.name = "reload1";
Locations[n].reload.l1.go = "Oxbay_Lighthouse";
Locations[n].reload.l1.emerge = "reload2";
Locations[n].reload.l1.autoreload = "0";
Locations[n].reload.l1.label = "Oxbay_lighthouse";
Locations[n].locators_radius.reload.Reload1 = 1.5;

n = n + 1;

NOTE for this I copied the folder for shipyard3, and renamed it Laboratory and renamed the files inside. If you're going to test this and don't want to make a new interior, change the references to any other place.

The way I have it, though, you can go into the shack at any time... this needs to be changed to make it enterable only after completing the main quest and dropping Clement off there. ALSO, when you enter this interior you get the same weird thing I get for all my added interiors, a complete absence of interior effects like, say, darkness. I hope you can figure out why this is.

AS WELL, the shack, from the outside, obviously has no windows as the slanty roof goes nearly to the ground. And there's no "back" image for this area anyway, so I'll have to black out the view through the windows from inside, or something.
