Graphics are a tad better than potc, quests are ok if a bit vague at times. Enemy AI is good ship combat is exciting and as usual the sail physics are great. Melee combat is hard especially early on when you have no fighters on your crew since the game seems to care nothing on if your one person or 4 you will be fighting multiple opponents sometime up to 4 or 5 for some of the newbie governor missions.
The bad? quests are overly obtouse sometimes you just gotta wander around and keep talking to people, but street citizens are mostly useless, once in a great while they will drop some useful rumors, but ask them about the other citizens and the town in general, they might as well have not included those chat lines at all. Some quest seem simple kill quests but aren't.
Then there are the meet me at midnight people, first time i got this request i figured middle of the day i will hole up in the tavern till evening for 5 plasters, meet the guy boom done. Go there at night head in noone there, did this a second time, third time i just followed the guy off the street after he requested the meeting and ohh ok midnight in the game is apparently whenever the guy approaches you even if it is morning. Translation error? i would hope.
Your fellow captains ship AI, your captains seem infinitely dumber than the enemy ships AI, they will let ships run while they circle and fire from long long range. Tell em to board a ship? well you better have it demasted and decimated the crew otherwise they will not catch it and if they do they will probably lose. and their gunnery in general leaves alot to be desired. Would be nice if you could lest order your other ships to use ammo types, they seem to only use ball shot and bomb shot period.
Got a bounty on your head? You better pay off a diplomat to smooth it out because bounty hunters have the psychic ability to find you no matter what port you are in. track you down incessently on the open sea, leaving port etc, would be nice if this was toned down some after awhile it gets very annoying.
About open sea travel, you get a pirate, navies following you, that is it they follow you. There can be merchants, trade convoys, other pirates they will ignore everything to chase you halfway across the ocean. I once managed to get a pirate fleet, a spanish fleet and a dutch fleet all in a british port that followed me all the way into the harbor proper, kinda funny to see about 15 red ships 3 or 4 green and the fort on your side. Really the amount of times they will run into a fort protected port chasing you is silly.
For all the warts however, this game is like the old sid meyer's pirates, you can pop into the game and hours will pass before you know where the time went. You can just sail around raiding caravans, doing quests (when you can figure them out), or just standing on the deck of your ship and enjoying the sounds of the boat and the sea for a good bit.
I hope some of the other issues are able to be adjusted with mods or patches. But if your liked sea dogs, carribean tales, you will enjoy this game there is a lot to do and a lot of replay value with the 4 different career choices, and a few were left out it seems.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Please, tell me about random missions:
In AOP was just bored, only take people or stuff from here to there, or escort ship.
I never see any other kind on mission.
What random mission you can got in COAS?
