Rank Replacer

Refar

Landlubber
The Ranks in the game bothered me from the start.

I can hardly imagine a Duke walking in a Haventavern to recruit scum or to duell himself with some annoying Captain for a barmaid... And wy would a Gouvernor - who most probably is not even a noble himself, "promote" a Marquis to Duke ?? Besides of that, all the ranks with the exception of Captain and Admiral were lubber ranks... So i decided to do something about it...

I replaced the lubber ranks with more maritime ones:

captain -> lieutenant
major -> commander
colonel -> captain
admiral -> commodore
baron -> rear admiral
count -> vice admiral
marquis -> admiral
duke -> lord

I am aware of, that some of the Ranks, may have beeen uncommon in the time/area of the game (as far i know only the "Commander" is really more modern, while "Lieutenant" was not a commanding officer but rather his deputy that times) In the end you can still be risen to nobility and become a Earl. If You have more appropriate suggestions, say a word...

I have modified the `Pirat-o`-pedia accordingly.

Since i am sure, being a true Pirates you will not be rearing the readme, i will place it here too:

<b>NOTE ON INSTALLATION</b>
opedia_enu.txt goes to the custom folder
text.ini is to be put in the <i>/Pirates/Assets</i> Folder <b><u>NOT</u></b> in the custom folder - at least it didn't worked for me, as did not paking the file to a .fpk

To remove the mod, just delete the files. Hope you liked it.

If you want to use this together with the <b>Parrot Mod by Rupertlittlebear</b>, wich is better, you should look <a href="http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=2472816#post2472816" target="_blank">here</a>

If you want the ranks only, get it <a href="http://pirates.piratesahoy.net/RE_ranks.zip" target="_blank">here</a>.
And Thanks to Pirates Ahoy! for the PublicFTP

Oh, pirates read the readmes... you can't trust your mates to read them correctly for you, now, would you? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/diomed.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dio" border="0" alt="diomed.gif" />

Surely Commodore was extant at the time? What was Norrington in Pirates of the Carribean? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

What! You are telling me that movie wasn't totally historically accurate?

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec--><i>only the <u>"Commander"</u> is really more modern</i><!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd--> i think it was 'invented' somwere mid/end 18th centurie.

As for Commodore - it was occasionaly used in 17th centurie but become a official rank later - at least in the britisch navy. As for other countries - i don't know.

How about master & commander which was Aubrey's rank before he became a captain? As well as `post-captain` etc...? Were those also later inventions?

"Captain" of a ship is not always the rank of "Captain". Captain James Cook was a Lieutenant for example.

Military ranks as we know them today started out as descriptions of functions and their origin is actually Italian, for they were first widely used by the Italian mercenaries of the fourteenth and fifteenth century, who formed the first real organized armies. The rank Captain (on land at least) comes from "capita" meaning "head" because he walked ahead of the men he commanded. Same thing with colonel, which is derived from "colon", the marching column of an army. Lieutenant is the description for the second- in- command, that´s why there are lieutenant colonels and generals.

Well master and commander was about Year 18** what would be ~150 Years later than Pirates!

Commander is a job title (whoever's in command of the men on a ship is the commander, if a lieutenant is in charge, he's the "commander"). Master was usually civilian and was the person who was in charge of the ship itself. Sometimes, they were different people (one man commanded the men, the other was master of the ship itself) but in Aubrey's case, he was "master and commander".

If you wanted to change those ranks so that they were all real ranks (at least in the British navy) you could change commander to captain, change captain to post captain.

Lieutenant
Captain
Post Captain
Commodore

Commodore was a real rank as well. He was simply a captain who was in temporary command of a group of ships. Once that group was dispersed (like after the pirates being chased were caught) he would go back to being a regular post captain. Commodore was a temporary rank.
