Judging by the number of posts about the Ship of the Line, I considered myself fortunate (and lucky) to have found one early in my first game. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Well as I was playing last night, I came across another and boarded it! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock:" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" />

So currently I have two Ships of the Line in my fleet <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />
The only problem will be when I divide up the plunder I will have to sell one of them <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

In case your wondering, I found the first one near St. Kitts on apprentice level and I found the second near Port au Paix (s). They are both French.

They are the best in my opinion, I've tried all the big (and most of the little ) ships. They turn very good and sail in practically any type and direction of wind. I remember using a War Galleon once where I go into a head wind and I couldn't move forward no matter how I tried to tack. With a Ship of the Line, I've not had that problem.

With the volleys of cannon balls they are capable of, you do sometimes sink a ship that you wanted to capture. You just have to be careful when using the round shot.

Just a note, I have yet to encounter a Royal Sloop.

This is my first game/first character. I am in the default time period, I think that if you go to create a new game/character it is the 2nd to last time period.

By the way, I found the second one in Journeyman mode.

Its funny, I went after a two ship convoy (after a few previous battles). I didn't know that the one of them was a Ship of the Line until it opened fire. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shock:" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" />
The only place I was used to seeing that many cannonballs coming out of was my flagship <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> My ship was smoking slightly from a previous battle so I figured I better grapple on and win it though swordplay <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />
 
That's sooo coool!!! WTG!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Stats on SotL say this:

size=large
turning radius=wide
classification=warship
min. crew=16
max. crew=300 (and then there's the triple hammocks, whooHOO!)
max. cannon=48
cargo=100
max. speed=fast
best point of sailing=BR, RBR, RBW

(that's Broad Reach, Running Broad Reach, and Running Before the Wind)
 
Get triple hammocks in a SOTL though and you BETTER have some cargo runners with you to hold all the food you're gonna need.

I play the German version and now I wonder what ship you talk about.

Kurtz: Let's just say I think you'd know one when you saw it. Cat posted the stats for it up above. I've played alot and have only ran into about four of them. I think it depends on the era you play in as to how frequently you'll run into them.

They both have triple hammocks. But why do all prefer the royal sloop? My favourite is the good ol' pirate brigantine <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />
 
These Ship of the Lines(Linienschiffe) are extremly rare.(verdammt selten) Mostly the french have one. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />
