Realistic Boarding

Will it be able to get palced with your crew on a ship and all the enemies on the other, so it will be more realistic, you will have to rush to the enemy ship, instead of being placed all around the place <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

yep it's been done. it wasn't included in the build because people found that their officers would get in their way on the small gangplanks, and they wouldn't get to any of the action (unless/until their officers all died <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> )

But if you place the player in front of the crew and officers, or if you place the crew all along the ship so the one who run faster will be in front... and as there is many plank to pass on, the player will always get a chance to be in the melee.

ANyway, it could be very good to have the choice... you see, mabe when we speak to our officer... to have the possibility to set boarding to "cmoplete melee" or to " wait on our side, we will charge all together"...

I play with the modded boarding myself. I think that it would work, although the major problem comes from aiming pistol shot. As it stands now, there is only a slight grace period as you cycle through targets. If the delay could be lengthened, or allow the gun only to fire after the fire button has been released, this boarding set up would work. Because my boarding guts trapped between the vessels, I end up shooting them more than the enemy.

But you can also make different boarding maps?
Like just a huhge ship so you have much more space and which is more realistic <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

If realism is the goal, then the boarding maps would most likely be smaller, or atleast representative of the vessels in the engagement. Remember, boarding was very cramped and very confused.

Also the problem with these different "maps" would be that there are 49 ships in the standard Build 11 with the Gunboat mod installed.

To make it realistic you would need to make 2401 different "maps" to reflect the number of different possibile ship boarding encounters that might crop up. Lets say that a modeler can do one of these a month then he would be done in just over 200 years.

I think it should stay as it is, it's not realistic but you are only on this map for a minute or two at a time.

It may be possible to cut that number back down to 49 by using the code that frex the item vendors' tents use, i.e. place geometry at locator, to place _your_ ship via script rather than having it in the location model.
But that's still one mesh per _boarding_ ship

Very early screenshots of the game showed boarding taking place on the actual ship models used for "at sea." I assume they took it out because of poor performance, but perhaps there is a way to look at making use of that idea.

Ok, it will be cool and maybe you can think about it of a later build...

But, for now, could it be possible to have the two position of your crew possible?

1- Normal melee...

2- Each crew on his side... captain in the middle!

hugh?

I'd like to see the boarding initiated from a different direction - i.e., the enemy boards YOU, and you are waiting with your crew on your ship, OR you board your enemy and they are waiting for you on their ship.

I hate the "instant boarding" and the `long-distance` boarding skills and I try never to use them... There's no real skill to it if you can instantly board the moment you are nearly in range with your grape - I mean, you can't even get a shot off before you're being scooped into the other ship for a battle on deck. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":blah:" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />

How about a boarding mod that instead of Hit F3 and away you go (or bang, the enemy just hit F3), you have to stay in range for >10 seconds and only _then_ can you board?

It'd be cool if we could add like grappling hooks as a new ammo type and require a certain amount of `close-range` hits before you could board. I doubt it could be done though. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> As for the instant boarding, I'm with you, Cat; I hate it. I'd much rather ruthlessly beat the tar out of my prey before boarding and looting them <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p:" border="0" alt="pirate2.gif" />

Yes, but it is so hard to have, like you say Cat, each crew on his side for some boarding? And a melee for the other? Maybe a random way to place crew? So each boarding will be a new challenge or almost!

I think we shud use the decks we are on when we are sailing let there be two functions on the boarding button, first get the crew to prepare for boarding, this should take 30 seconds to a minute, e.g. everyone goes and gets swords handed out etc and the grappling hooks,or in military vessels the troops come up on deck, (I assume this can be done with the spawn person scripting at the entrances to the deck) Then you hit the board button again and when your in range your crew throw over the grappling hooks you wait another few moments whilst the ships either lock together or tear apart again once pulled close enough you jump over. thats how it shud be done really, I'd like to be able to walk about my ship more e.t.c. go and see Dr. Maturin in the cockpit apputating limbs and ask him what the butchers bill is etc! speak to the carpenter in the lower hull patching up holes below the water line how kewl wud dat be, lol!. Just a few retextures is all that is required i shud think on some of the tatty looking decks. Also is it possible to replace the scabby lookin crew in sailing mode with your proper crew and perhaps see your officers on the ship as they are meant to be doin things and i never see them on deck and have it in the same view mode as you do when on dry land. Just press scope view once to got to aim view and then scope view again to use ur scope.

That would be cool. Have a sequence after a boarding incident where you can ask the surgeon how many men were killed, and the carpenter as to how much damage was delivered.
