Saint Martin

zorglub

Privateer
Storm Modder
You all know that in the Build Saint Martin is the only island with two oposed cities that are continiously attacking each other ; to enter one of those by land you need to find a underground passage and with Greenfort & Oxbay there are the only cities defended on land by cannons.

The strange thing is that historically the two sides of the island weren't always fighting like that against themself, on the contrary both of them were very often under British menace and helped each other... And whenever they got at war, usually one side was immediatly conquered so no long siege like the ones ingame...

So the question that come back again is : which time period? This was never solved, as we want everybody's work into the Build - including former Napoleonic add-on. But I'd enjoy that to be clarified one day!

heck, it's fun! who cares? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" />

I know, I myself do enjoy fighting on one side or another... But it gives a false idea of what really happen on that island, and that's a bid bothering.

I think CouchcaptainCharles did that just for the sake of being fun. To prevent all the islands from being the same. I think it is possible to end the fighting by going into the land fort of one of the sides and change the nation of that side to the other side so that the island is conquered. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

ooh, gonna try that! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" /> if i could, that is. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

Right. BTW, you can enter a town also by sneaking through the frontlines. Each battlefield has a narrow path that is out of the range of siegegunfire.

As for the history, I did some research on St Martin's history, and the main theme was always the divided nature of the island, Peter Stuyvesant's first famous battle etc. (and the tale how the border was finally determined by two runners racing along the coast). But SVS is probably right that the fighting wasn't THAT fierce and neverending.

In Alpha 7 Plus we seem to again have the issue that the fighting in fact does not continue. It must have something to do with the corpsemode, but new enemies are no longer generated after the old ones were killed. I wonder if it would be possible to somewhat rewrite those battles so that there'll be Dutch soldiers fighting French soldiers and leave out the "Bataven" (pirates). Perhaps using some Ambush() lines that are re-run every time there are only a few enemies left in the location or something?

Yes, I've heard that tale. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> For what I had read, Peter Stuyvesant fighted at Saint Martin against the Spaniards - before French and Dutch took the island, it was spanish. Both French and Dutch corsairs ships used the island as a base, there were boucaners installed, some Frenchmen settled on one side of the island growing tobacco and Dutchmen on the opposite side trading salt. There were some problems about deciding were the border had to be, but I recall only two major treaties on that subject, distant of two centuries - so it seems it wasn't much of a problem after all...

It would be very interesting if any cities of the Archipelago could be attaqued like those two. Is this doable? It wouldn't be endless siege but a more interesting attack-the-city-by-land mod.

well, get your officers, and slaughter the guys in the fort after charging through the gates! done! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":))" border="0" alt="smile2.gif" /> but i guess you mean an entire army?

That would be very interesting.

Off topic a little, but has anyone notice that there isn't a smuggler contact in either Point Au Prince or Point Au Pitre? Both take silks as contraband, but no smuggler to set up the transaction.

Smuggling seems almost a cheat. From St. Martin you can grab silks at around $45t and sell them at Santa Domingo for $432t. With 3 Schooners carrying 150t of silk is roughly 300k. From Santa Domingo you can get sandal for $95t. Take it to St. Martin and it's $789t. That trade makes around $789k. So about 1 mil per cycle, with 3 schooners at roughly 1000 cargo. Between St. Martin and Hispanola is about 7 days, so about 1 million a week.
