Started a new game and picked the Polacca for me starting ship this time. It didn't take long before I decided that it looked like a rotting rusting hulk that was about to sink. So she is getting retextured. The goal is not to make her look pretty as it is well known that you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. The goal is to slap some paint on her and make her look only slightly abused. Here is where she is right now.

I'm trying out different trim now. It looks like the Polacca can have white, yellow, blue, green, and red trim. The thing is, everything changes. Here is blue.

I've got to admit that looks a bit silly. The default wooden look for her is quite nice, though of course VERY weathered.

The dull red for the hull is about the best there is as other textures are the wrong size. 2048X2048 makes everything twice as big as 1024X1024 so so the planks are either half of a large tree each or little bitty things.

As for the trim I'm trying to give her a painted look vs unpainted weathered wood. It sounds like you like the first two screenies best, but here are the other colors anyway.

The white and dark green ones make for a bit of strange contrast, but I do like the yellow one.
And that orangey variation is just plain stylish; definitely the best of them all!

Hmm, light red and yellow. I came up with this toned down yellow one that I like, plus some small details have been changed.

Here are a bunch more of it after some detail changes. There is nothing I can do about those cannons as their texture is a special one. The planks on the inside of the hull are just right, but when put on the outside they are huge and look terrible.

Why can't you mod those files?
lafette.tga = cannon including the gun carriage.
rohr.tga = an extra texture for the cannon pipe. (the rugged(?) texture)

But I don't see either the problem with the guns.

Nice work! It certainly now looks like the work of a shipbuilder who takes pride in his job rather than one who just hammers some planks together and calls it done.

The stern shot shows what looks like a sort of picture frame above the windows:


Would it be possible to fill that with some sort of picture or emblem?

I don't like the rusted, pitted look. I tried replacing rohr with a blank texture and the cannon disappeared. Then I replaced rohr with lafette and got a wooden cannon. So the ship has rusted out corroded cannons that probably were salvaged from an old shipwreck.

Yes that is a picture frame but I have not tried to add a picture to it. Outside of the light pinnace there is nothing anyway.

@Hylie Pistof, try this one. Only thing is if other ships use this one as well you have to namechange it and
change the reference in HEX-editor too.

That fixed the cannons and the anchors. This is the only ship that uses that texture.

What does that look like compared to the earlier situation then?

The texture is more shiny and not the rusted, pitted look but the color is still black. I'll include it in the next upload.
