Pieter, it was the links from THIS post by Suraknar. He says that the domain is about to expire, so I figured I had better loot what I can so there is at least a backup somewhere. I thought it might add a bit to the Build History file to have some actual tutorials on the basics. I don't recall seeing any of this on our wiki, maybe I just missed it, most of this hasn't been updated for several years.
AH! In that case, thanks very much! Good thinking. :onya
Indeed none of that is on our wiki. Would be nice to add and update it one day,
but there's so much things that are 'nice' that I don't know how we're ever going to do them all. :facepalm

Sometimes I think purtty good for a barbarian! xD:

These are by no means finished, but I have gone through and edited all the code entries so they are at least a lot more recognizable as such. It's a bit tough to follow, especially when the code entries cover more than one page. In some examples I tried changing the font size, and that works to a limited extent. If anyone has any suggestions of how to do it better, please don't hesitate to say something! Also please let me know if I have copied something wrong or have things out of order, or if you feel it could be in easier flowing reading order. Basically, I just stared from the top and worked my way down the list.

Also, I haven't had time to pretty it up much, fix the indexing and the links, or go through and edit the hyperlinks. I know some of this is outdated, but there really is some good stuff here! I also think it adds quite a bit to the history part, to see just what some of the steps our modders went through, and how they changed certain things or ways of doing things over the years. If anyone has any updates for any of the tutorials, please post them and I will gladly add those as well. Who knows, one day I may even get around to reformatting them and putting them up on our current wiki where they belong, but if someone else has the time and wants to do that now, by all means feel free to jump right in!

For now I am going back to finishing the preface and the pirate history and introduction to SWS's tutorials for the manual! No, I haven't forgotten, I am just old and slow! :wp

Yes, an update!

I'll get right on it once I get the Mark III WBT package deployed, that needs its own individual manual.

As for publishing - you can let me do the PDF part (but as you wish :3)

---

I've gone through the material - all of it is great stuff, especially where I've never worked with game scripting directly! Oh literally I do, but only to modify the operation of existing code :3

This is definitely manual material and should have its own dedicated section. Since this is a singleplayer game, players should be encouraged to add new content and also to mod what they feel can be improved.

Something you don't often get in a game!

I definitely appreciate any help you have the time to give SWS, I was planning on doing it myself because you have been so busy with other projects. Your creative touch is something I can't even come close to duplicating!

I am planning on adding a preface to the beginning of the tutorial section stating basically that "if you don't like what we have done, or you think we did it wrong, fix it yourself! Here is how!"

Hehe, creative? I can only draw pillows for my girls (believe me I did try to hand draw the ship manual).

The rest are just hodgepodge "when mood allows" things.

As for your contributions - keep them coming. I like your technical and informative style and you made the first part of the manual very easy to complete. You just pump out the drafts and I'll format them.

Great job, Thagarr! Seriously great job!
I had a quick look through and that stuff is definitly worth saving, despite being somewhat old. :yes

Thanks Pieter, there really is some fantastic stuff in those tutorials! I think these show just what a tremendous job the original modders did at giving us a stable code base to mod from. I tried to absorb as much as I could while I was going through them, but there is a lot to take in.

Files received.

So you want me to edit and publish...........

a 300 page document?

When we're done it'll rival the best of them games from a long long past where a certain F-16 flight simulator came with something not unlike the real F-16 flight manual!

The build manual is now missing every chapter after the Battle for Liberty tutorial (and of course Act IV of the movie which will serve as closure), which includes naval tactics (which MIGHT be hand drawn, it's easier) and of course some pointers on land combat, simple as it is, the new guys would wonder why they're getting cut down in an instant when they first start playing.

I'll take care of the Tutorial and History manual SWS, so you wont have to worry about that. I posted that update yesterday, before our conversation today. That will give you time to concentrate on your Willemstad Builders' Trials and get them finalized. If you want, I can also try and throw something together for a ship recognition guide.

We do have a ship recog. guide... in the WBT thread.

ps. Are the contents of the manual preface 100% complete? I would not like to reconfigure all the hyperlinks.

Oh yeah! Hadn't thought of that! :facepalm

Yes, I believe so, I can't think of anything else that needs to be added. Believe me, I understand exactly what you mean about having to reformat!!!

I Deleted the .DOC file in my post above and attached a draft .PDF of the Tutorials if you want to take a look, it's not complete as I haven't added an index yet, but it will give you an idea of what the final version will look like.

I thought to email you my parchment so all our NH documents will look alike.

But on second thought it's a huge chore to make it look right in OpenOffice so... you might want to let me do that.

I thought about using the parchment you had in the game manual, but that was part of your style, and it looks fantastic! Obviously though, our styles differ a bit. As I said, it's just a draft and nothing is final yet. There are a few more graphic elements I want to add, and after seeing how things looked in the export, I will have to change a bit of the formatting. I just wanted to give an idea of what the final will look like.

Ah, I didn't manage to get the PDF version at work, what with the usual corporate warfare going on.

It looks every bit as good as mine, I assure you :3

I wouldn't go that far, but thanks! :doff

"Modding_Tutorials_and_History" looks pretty good, though I reckon it should be quite possible to trim a lot of the content in there.
Most notably the old "buildinfo" stuff. Though I'm not sure what would be the easiest way of handling that... :?

I was actually thinking of adding a bit more! xD:

There are some things that I could trim out f there that aren't really that important, but it's kind of nice to have it complete as it was released for easier reference if nothing else. I was thinking of adding Couch Captain Charles readme that he included in the direct sail standalone in the downloads section, that is a big achievement! But if I add that, I will need to try and put all of build 14 in there as well, and that's the only readme I have run across for build 14 that I recall.

It's interesting that no one is voting for a 10 page toilet paper "manual".

Game companies should take a few notes from me :p
