Seeing the name of your ship on the ship

Mates, I don't know if this has ever been brought up before, but it would add alot more quality to the game if you could see the name of your ship printed or scripted into the stern or somewhere else on the ship. This would of course be an option that could be changed while not sailing!

That would require changing the graphics and what not. Unfortunatly not as easy as ye could think.

We should be able to design our own pirate flags, or Navy pennants, and see them on our ships as well. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

it would be nice, but not as easy as it might seem.

with <i>some</i> ships, you can reskin them to create a `one-off` ship with its name on the stern, but many of the ships only have a texture for half the stern, reflected on the other side (so you could only have a ship's name there if it was symmetrical. like "MAM". or "WOW" lol <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="^_^" border="0" alt="happy.gif" />). you can't have the name on the side of the ship because it would read backwards on the opposite side.

i can't think of a way that you could have this done dynamically `in-game` - you'd have to come up with some way of changing the texture every time the ship's name changed. sorry mate...
 
I been thinking about this since my last post, and it occured to me that you could always change your sails, as others have done, and put the ship's name on the new sails that you create. I realize that it's not exactly what you are talking about, but I believe that it's a lot easier to accomplish.

yes, i made a new `custom-sails`-adding system, which should be available whenever the community gets together to release the next build!

the first flag is the <a href="http://www.gencat.net/" target="_blank">catalan</a> flag and the second is the flag of <a href="http://www.bcn.es/" target="_blank">barcelona</a>, the capital of catalonia. i'm a bit of a catalanophile and i'm going to barcelona next week to stay there for a year <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

the third isn't a real official flag, but it's the traditional symbol of the 'ten towns' in northwestern england, where the industrial revolution began. oh and where the first electronic computer was built. i'm a bit proud <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="^_^" border="0" alt="happy.gif" /> (the 'ten towns' later became 'greater manchester,' which now doesn't really exist :x ). oh and i live there <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="^_^" border="0" alt="happy.gif" /> in october we have to vote on whether to have a regional government for the `north-west`, and there are plans for an official flag. yay! i love flags...

the fourth is the flag of <a href="http://www.girton.cam.ac.uk/" target="_blank">girton college</a>, my college in cambridge university. (ooh i've just realised you can see the flag in flight on the picture on the website <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> ) i might have included the university flag too, but there is a length limit on signatures lol

the english flag and the union jack are conspicuous by their absence. i hate them. so many people were flying them throughout the euro cup... i'm almost glad england got beat <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blush.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":eek:ops" border="0" alt="blush.gif" />: , cos everyone's taken them down now!

Now I'm really glad I asked, not only do I get the info from you, I get links to get even more information. This confirms for me how smart it was to finally join PA rather than "lurking" the site, which I was doing during my lunch hour, prior to May, since last August.

This way if I'm really curious about something I can ask about it, like above as opposed to sit around and wonder. (Someone has to come up with a better term than "lurking". I prefer to call it "Batmanning" because, like Batman, some of us are just not, or are only rarely, joiners.

I like the word "lurk" (like I ever DO lurk, LOL!)... It has such a middle of the night cemetary monuments in the shadows kind of feel to it... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />
