Selling ships with booty

Sea Hawk

Landlubber
Hi folks,

I try to sell a junk to the shipwright but he's says I'll lose the cargo if I sell. Being the `tight-fisted` git that I am, I go to the merchant and sell off most of the stuff except for food and a few cannons. However, when I go back to the shipwright the problem still remains. I've tried changing ships, then going to the merchant and then back to the shipwright but this doesn't work either .... what gives? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Then you still have too much stuff. Go back to the merchant and sell even more, or else go to another port if the first merchant doesn't have enough cash to buy enough from you.

Try to sell so that only cargo capacity of the ship(s) you intend to keep remains. Might pose a problem if merchant is short of cash, and selling would cause too much defict. If you already do that, and problem still remains? Might be a bug.

And welcome to PA <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" /> *Offers rum looted from last raid against Spaniards* <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/buds.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":drunk" border="0" alt="buds.gif" />

The shipwright will tell you how much cargo you'll loose. That's the amount that you have to sell in order to be able to sell your ship without a loss of cargo.

Or dump it if you're too lazy to deal with it, like me! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />

I usually go sell of all the cannon that are not part of my own ship - and then any extraneous goods like, well, GOODS, or luxuries or sugar, or whatever - and then go to the shipwright to see about selling the ships. If I still have anything left over, it's just food - and usually not much - so I just say, DUMP it and be done with it. It leaves you with a full ship with max cannon.

If you do NOT sell off the cannon, the shipwright will dump your food before he dumps your cannons, so you will end up with a little food and three times the cannons you can fire as cargo. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Cat, too bad the is no rum in the game. There should be third option, "Drink all the rum and then sell." <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" />

Harrr! Straydog,I'd be like'n de third option ye suggested <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Oh just drink all the rum... The rest can handle itself! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="xD:" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/buds.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":drunk" border="0" alt="buds.gif" />

Cat,

? on the selling all cannons except what you need for your flagship. Does this hinder you if you run into several ships (good ships lets say)? If you have only your flagship with cannons and you suffer any serious loss you can't change flagships for the next ship you face.

I usually try to leave port with 3 months of food and the exact number of cannons needed for my flagship.

I can always get more on the high seas. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/diomed.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dio" border="0" alt="diomed.gif" />

It has been my experience that when you change flagships the appropriate amount of cannon and crew transfer to the new ship. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I often run with more than one ship, for example, 1 Royal Sloop and 4 Trade Galleons.. I will have 187 crew and 20 cannon on the Royal Sloop and maybe 50 crew per trade galleon. However, if I change flag ships to a Trade Galleon and check status, the cannon are now on it as well as max crew that will fit.

It has been my experience that when you change flagships the appropriate amount of cannon and crew transfer to the new ship.

My question on this is if you actually lost some guns in the first battle, say I have 16 guns on my sloop, lose 3 or 4 in the this engagement, now I would go into my next engagement with 16 less the 3 or 4 I lost right <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" />

My tactic has been to travel with a `back-up` ship that I want to fight in. This way I can slug it out and not run from the pirate hunters.

Perhaps an option is Frigate and Royal Sloop, start out in the frigate and if for some reason you lose some guns in the 2nd battle you should have more than enough to arm the Royal Sloop <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bookish.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":mm" border="0" alt="bookish.gif" />

With this battle line, it gives me the option of using a very fast ship against very fast opponents, and if I need more firepower I can switch to the frigate

Just a thought, still learning the ropes

Cheers

I just take the cannon from the ships I defeat in battle..I always have extra cannon. I have noticed several threads asking about cannon.. I honestly do not understand the problem..

Why anyone would be out of cannon baffles me. Everytime you have a ship battle you can get the enemy cannons and add to your cargo.

The only thing I can think off that would prevent this is if you sink every ship you battle with and then get no cannon. Or you batter them until they have no canon left, either way is a bad idea, at least to me. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="ohmy.gif" /> I always switch to Chain and just decimate the crew while trying to limit the damage to the ship.

*someone help me understand what I am not understanding* <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

You can probably understand this:

You haven't played any of these ship games before you bought this game. You forget to hire the extra crew to have a full crew, follow that up with taking on a much better ship and the result isn't very pretty. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" />

That is how it happened to me, yeah you learn from that, but that is the fun thing about it.

Comprende?

@GIJoe: I'm in the same boat with you. I don't understand the cannon problem some people have either. I always sail with my Royal Sloop (if I can get one) and only 20 cannons when I leave port and if I sometimes lose a cannon or two in a battle, the defeated ship will replenish my stores before my next battle.

Perhaps some people are just sinking their loot or something...

And yes, I also settle on decimating the crew with grape before I board, rather than damaging the ship itself...

That's the way I handle it. I leave port with 4 more cannon than my flagship can use, in case I get hit and strip all the guns from my target. I have enough food to last a couple of months unless I'm going far away, and I steal everything I can.

I then pop into a town with my "gaggle" of prize ships and sell the cargo - including all the cannon and food except for what I need on my flagship - before I sell the ships. I don't need to stock a second ship, because I don't keep one - guess I am a captain, not a commodore! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />

I only mentioned this because if you do not sell your cargo first, when you go to the shipyard and the shipwright asks you if it is okay to dump cargo to sell a ship, the LAST cargo to go are the cannons. If you are not careful, you will end up with many cannons but no food for your men, that way. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

My dearest Captain V,

I wish to convey my deepest appreciation for the eloquence of your response. I am forever in your debt for helping me to understand your particular imbroglio. Peace be unto you.
