I shared out the gold & shiver me timbers they all scarpered ?!! think they'd want tol stay with a well paying capt...

The crew keeps an eye on the amount of loot in the hold, then checks the calendar to see how many months they have been sailing and if the amount of loot per head does not satisfy them, they get grumpy... They just want to get what's coming for them and find another captain to sail with.

Either kill a few of your men, so that the individual shares grow, or get some more loot quickly!
 
Or you do both and sack a nice, rich and well- defended town. That usually kills a lot of your crew and yields some nice loot to satisfy the survivors.

Actually, the most effective way to play would be to sack and loot as much as possible during the early part of the game. This means that you should not go after Raymundo or Mendoza or anyone if they are reported to be long away from you (that will just waste time and let your crew become grumpy again).

When you have about 400000 in gold you should be able to keep up a crew of about 100 men without any problems with mutiny. With a million in gold, they will stay happy eternally, even if you never feed them.

Following this, I never divide my plunder.

Yes, it does. Just go for the big bucks in the early game (Raymundo, Mendoza, and the biggest towns you can attack) and you'll quickly have enough gold to keep the crew happy for the rest of your 1000 year career.
 
ye can also get instruments from de mysterious stranger in de tavern that will keep yer crew happier on long voyages,but ye still need ter loot an plunder te keep de buggers happy <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />
