Sid Meier's Pirates! is Gold!

I cant believe it, Sid Meiers Pirates is a total copy of Tortuga Pirate Hunter/Port Royale. It should really be called Port Royale 2 as it makes a better sequal than the actual Port Royale 2 game. And Port Royale 2 which in turn copys heavily from Tropico 2.

I didn't opt for PR2, as I did not care for PR1. SMPirates! to me, is vastly more entertaining. So is Tropico2, IMO. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

Vastly more entertaining? Ill admit Ive just starting playing SMPirates, so maybe Im not aware of something in the game, but sofar the gameplay exactly mimics Port Royale..... the fast paced sea battles, the map navigation, town interface/trade system. I was expecting that SMPirates would be a sort of cross between Monkey Island and POTC, but its not, except for a few cut scenes, its gameplay is exactly the same as Port Royale. I will admit that Tropico 2 is vastly more fun that Port Royale 2, I was just making the point that Port Royale 2 is trying to copy alot of land building features of Tropico 2.

Actually Brad, it's gameplay is exactly like it's long lost relative - the very first Pirates! - if the new version of SM Pirates! seems familiar to any other game, it's becuase that other game copied the original Pirates! from back in 1987.

Heh, yes, Cap'n Toast, exactly. The original SMP is the benchmark all other pirate games have aspired to...

Me, I've always been an "Uncharted Waters" fan, from waaaaaay back when I first had it on the original Nintendo system. Their progression to UWNew Horizons" (PC and SNES) was wonderful. Then they stopped making it for `English-speaking` audiences, so I was left out of any future releases (until they release their MMORPG sometime soon) - but I still play BOTH of these games today.

Brad, do you play PR2 a LOT? I honestly did not care for PR1, and so didn't even bother with PR2. Tell me why you like it, maybe I'll change my mind and dig into it... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

Lady Cat, Yellowbeard started an "Uncharted Waters" thread down in the other games forum just recently. It appears that he is as fond of that game as we are. I have to query him on whether he has played Redguard. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/danse1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dance" border="0" alt="danse1.gif" />

Thanks for the tip, Sir Christopher! I haven't much time to spend on these forums lately but I'll now have to take a peek into the UW thread, cool! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="8)" border="0" alt="cool.gif" />

Yes you could say I play it alot, although more for the quick sea action part of it, because Im rather thick headed when it comes to economic strategy games. The sea battles are so fun because its so fast paced, unlike Age of Sail which is like watching a snail race.

To understand PR1 you really have to play Patrician 3 which is also made by Ascaron who made PR1, which is a Hanseatic trading game. In that game you not only do sea trade but can own warehouses in port citys you trade in and can even build workshops to make goods of your own. And ofcourse you have to do some pirating as well as fighting pirates to make your bussiness grow. PR1 leaves out alot of the aforementioned trading features and so can become overbearing for people who arent detail minded because there is so much information to process, but you can still skate through the game ignoring the trading and the quests. PR2 has attempted to bring in some of the Patrician features, but hasnt done it very well in my opinion. Laptop magazine voted PR1 one of the top ten games for bussiness travelers, and thats what its good for, a few hours of fun, not something like Tropico 2 or POTC where you have to go all the way through the game to enjoy it.

Hummm, I am regretting not getting P3, I think... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":?" border="0" alt="unsure.gif" />

Thanks, Brad, I'll give PR2 a second look. Sometimes I want a brief moment of fun instead of a `full-blown` game, although I find PotC to be that way, quick sail out and attack a few ships, bring in the cargo and the ships to sell, then out to try again, hit and run, hit and run... It's almost embarassing to say how many millions I have in PotC, and me yet to finish the main quest (Silehard pays me a paltry 5000 gold to run an errand for him, and along the way I take six ships and make 50,000... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" /> ).
