some advice for a new CoAS player! :)

Hello, I got few questions:)


I hope you can help me out!





1)
I'm thinking of starting on difficulty level spikker-liet-captain.

Captain should be "normal" - medium level?
In a long run, I don't want game to be too easy for me , as I wouldn't want any bonuses for myself. It may be hard and save/load at beginning, but that is my wish:)
(I've sailed ~15 years, so I know a bit about sailing, I hope Akella did also:p)

brief: Liet-Captain should be medium difficulty, yes? No bonuses fer me - no bonuses fer AI/enemy. Victory or loss plays out who has better ship + better tactics + higher lever etc.



2) When starting with certain character who has nationality of e.g. england/france, is possible to "change" it to spanish for example? I start working fer spanish etc? Is there any negative aspects of that?

3) There won't be any info on map which towns/ports there are on island (unless ur relatively close to them?) or it raises with level or somehow?

briefly: whole point of buying maps is to educate urself in RL aswell - it doesn't change any game aspect (new info on maps etc?)



4) A question starting char

*Keeping experience growing slider in middle or slightly to right is okay? I don't want to be uber-slow/fast with experience, I want to feel rewarded for getting level; "no pain no gain," but also too much pain is not nice:)

*should I keep encounters few or standard? I hope standard isn't actually high or smth:) (sorry about this stupid questiong)

Alternatively I could drop my authority to 9 (is that high needed? I really wouldn't like to command BIG fleets, 2-3maximum sounds nice, maybe 4?)
medium weapons, good authority, is my choices.

I read about TALENT in manual, but I still quite don't get it,does it also gives faster exp gaining?? then wasting 7 seems too much, if I can use slider to set it?
Endurance 5 seems okay - I can raise my energy gain with those feats over levers.


Sorry if I seem too nerdish with questions:) I just really love good old pirate games, played POTC for a while, Sea Dogs and some really old one also:)

Well, I'll try to answer the best I can :)

1) Yeah, Captain should be somewhere in the middle, but if it's your first game, try easier - in the start it's still challenging, but it get's too easy later on though

2) Yes, it is possible by obtaining letter of marque (patent) from another nation

3) You can see the names of the towns as well as islands on the world map - just press tab and you can scroll around the map by moving mouse (this is one of the few things I didn't like about the game, but what can ya do)

4) I usually put the exp on lowest value, it's slow but it's not that slow; And as far as encounters go, I have no idea - but even on low your map will be filled with AI ships sometimes :)

5) P.I.R.A.T.E.S. Give only starting values of the skills, so don't worry about that too much, since with just a bit of effort you can go pass that bonus in no time.
Anyway, you can have max of 5 ships (including your own - or was it 4?) in the convoy, authority only affects how many officers you can hire - with 9 authority you can hire 18 officers if I remember right - I always have it high though, since I like to leave a lot of ships in the ports, that way I don't run out of officers. Not sure how TALENT affects the game and exp gain, but as far as Endurance goes, that one is good to have high, since you only gain energy by leveling after you take dynamo (I think that's what's called) perk.
