Solved Store/Shipyard Treatment of Enemy Players

indeed, that with bartolomeu is a very nice idea :yes maybe we could combine the controlling soldiers and this dangerous-attribute? On what depends if you get recognized or not?

At the moment it is a simple 50/50 chance. We might be able to adapt that to use your on-sea flag detection chance.
The way that one works is that as you build up fame, there is a higher chance of you being detected for who you are.
So in the early game, mostly everyone believes your flag. But they DON'T when you are an Admiral in the enemy fleet.

The false flag does not work well at all now. All it does is stop the forts from firing on you.

What you are proposing would mean that to do business in a hostile town you would have to evade their ships going in to a secluded shore, fight your way into town, fight your way across town to the smuggler, then fight your way back across town and the island back to your ship. Then fight the navy again.

That is excessive to put it mildly. Also impossible.

I have indeed been seeing that more ships are hostile to you when the scene is loaded than should be the case. But not all of them. Right?
What exactly have you been experiencing?

I'm just brainstorming. What do you think should happen if you are in a hostile town? The way I figure it, you technically shouldn't even be there.
And if you ARE there for the sake of smuggling at a hostile island, then it is little wonder that they wouldn't attack you. Right?

How famous does one need to be to be instantly recognized by common soldiers and townfolk? They did not have photography back then. If you are an Admiral or a famous Pirate then yes you would be recognized, but if you are not famous only people you have dealt with would recognize you.
Smuggling was quite common then so the townfolk would not care about another smuggler, only the military. And successful smugglers, by definition, do not come to the military's attention.
Also, some of the storylines require you to go into hostile towns and if you had to fight everyone as soon as you set foot in town, would that not break the storyline?
I suppose so. There's so much still broken anyway, that I suppose we should leave this as-is.
Not being able to trade at hostile ports is making things hard enough. :shrug

It is so easy to get a whole town mad at you as it is. Get attacked by a bounty hunter and accidentally strike an innocent bystander and away we go!
Get questioned by a soldier.
Try to attack a soldier for his weapons and other soldiers come running from all over.

That's a different problem altogether; indeed the AI group coding IS messed up. :facepalm

Making towns too hostile, such as having guards kill you on sight, would probably ruin certain quests and storylines where sneaking into a hostile settlement is necessary.
Thinking about it though, how would anyone in a hostile town always know that you are an enemy? You don't exactly have a big sign on you saying "I'M ENGLISH! EN GUARDE!" or something. :shrug
I could understand this if you're flying a false flag and your ship is moored in port, and perhaps there's a chance that the harbour master reports you to the authorities.
However, if you moor your ship at a secluded bay and sneak into town, I think you should be allowed to go about your business as usual.

UNLESS we add another trap, based on the Luck skill, whereby the player's "accent" sounds a bit fishy to a merchant/tavern keeper/shipyard owner/soldier, and one of them reports you to the guards.
In this case, we could allow the player to bribe said person, based on their Commerce skill, in order to stay hidden. Or not, if the skill is too low.

Then we have the reputation system to consider. Maybe if you become too well-known, someone in the street might recognise you and call for the guards.
Again, perhaps with a high Luck skill, the chances of this happening could be reduced.

Probably a lot of work, but how does that sound?

I'll call this "Solved". For simplicity's sake, we'll keep things as-is for now.
