Strange CD error, can't load game

Hello everyone!

I read through the FAQ here and skimmed thourhg some of the posts to see if anyone else had experienced this, but it doesn't seem so.

I purchased and installed <i>Pirates!</i> yesterday but when I insert the CD (CD#2, figured that out) I only get this Windows error message:

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->"<i>Please insert the original Pirates! disc instead of a backup. See www.securom.com/copy for more details."</i><!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I took that copy back to the store, got a refund thinking it was a bad CD and today picked up another copy from a different store.

SAME error message!

* I am NOT running a copy unless both Best Buy and Target are scamming me.

* I am NOT running any CD copy software in the background.

* I have up to date video drivers on my NVidia GEForce4, DX9.0c, and have about 80 GB of other games on my machine that ALL run flawlessly.

I'm about at the point now that this game will be going back for good, which would be a shame since it looks like a good one. Can anyone come up with ideas of what the problem might be? I'd appreciate it.

1. Make sure you aren't running any programs in the background.

2. Pirates! is known to have problems with some `low-end` `CD-drives`, so you may want to check that your drive is not one of the cheapest possible models.

All this as `hear-say`, since I've had no trouble at all...

Thanks for the feedback. I'm using a 2.0Ghz Alienware that's barely a year old. The CDRW is `LITE-ON` `LTR-48125W` - I don't know if that's a cheapie or not, but nothing else on this machine was cheap <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

What still mystifies me is that I have never had this problem with any other game I own, and my HD is almost full of games. They all run flawlessly except for this one.

alright heres a quick fix which may solve your problem, though not ideally - go to start, run, regedit. From there browse to hkey_local_machine, hardware, devicemap, scsi - there should be four keys from scsi port 0 to 3. Look for a key with reference to "a347scsi". Right click on this key and choose 'Permissions', select the 'Administrators' group and tick the 'Deny' box on second permission row ("Read"). Validate by "Ok" and answer "Yes" to the confirmation dialog. IF this method doesnt work, delete the key and it should work, although the key will be generated by windows when you restart, forcing you to delete it again. This is a securom problem, which can be triggered by poor cd drives and of course cd emulation software. Enjoy and i hope this helped! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hi.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":gday" border="0" alt="hi.gif" />

I have the same problem with this message.

I have `icq-messenger`. You must end this programm "icq" and then run pirates.

I have the same problem and I have the DVD version of the game. However, I can sometimes get into the game by restarting the computer and trying again. But then the graphics problems start and make it unplayable. What a buggy game to get for Christmas...

I fixed my problem but I had to do something I've never done before, and am reluctant to admit -- I downloaded a CD crack that bypasses the CD check. It worked like a charm and now I can actually see what the rest of you have been raving about. My conscience is clear because I paid for the game (twice actually <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> ).

Aye glad ye got yer game werk'n mate, however der be a policy At PA,we do not promote CD Crack as we 'ave good relations with software publishers, please do not advertise any said links in this thread IF ANYONE ASKS or yer post will be deleted, however feel free to private message each other if ye feel de need <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Have the same problem with a dvd version of the game on a brand new high spec machine with a double layer recordable dvd rom drive.

I suspect the latter is my problem as the securerom thinks i am trying to copy it but still thinks the disk is a copy with it isnt.

At first it came up with an "unable to verify disk within time limit" error now it just thinks its a copy.

It looks like i will have to return the game as i cant see a patch coming out for this problem as Valve did for Half Life 2 when a similar problem occurred for it.

Hondo,

it is well known that this copy protection fails on some drives.

apparently if u contact atari tech support by email, they can send u an official "crack" that will bypass the cd check. (this thread is an early one on these boards)

i had the same trouble a couple of years ago with the balders gate 2 expansion and their "laserlock" protection. but the tech support from them was good enough to publish the the "crack" as a micro patch on their website. shame Atari arent up to speed aswell.

Thanks Steve

I have sent in a request to Atari and will let you know what they say.

I saw a mate playing Pirates and it looks great, so i will be very unhappy if i have to return it.

All the best
