The basics FAQ

How do i edit the weather? i've been trying to turn down the rain chance or turn it off all together cause it's starting to really piss me off how much it rains, it's completely idiotic. but anyways i've changed the rainchance value on the internal settings but of course it doesn't do shit.

I don't know how to edit weather. I do know what you mean though... When I'm testing a quest that I am writing I want to do it as fast as possible and the weather just stuffs it all up <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

I'll see if I can find an answer for that one when I'm back home and near my game again.
I'd like to know this as well, because indeed there IS too much rain. It's supposed to be the Caribbean and it feels like the Netherlands.
Trying to make some screenshots for my location-specific loading screens project,
I just couldn't make the rain go away even after waiting several days at a tavern and reloading inbetween. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mybad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":facepalm" border="0" alt="mybad.gif" />

at least you have a boarding crew me i don't have any only my officers <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

Shouldn't there be some tropic rains, that last for weak or two?

<!--quoteo(post=332176:date=Jun 23 2009, 05:57 PM:name=SuperDurnius)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (SuperDurnius @ Jun 23 2009, 05:57 PM) <a href="index.php?act=findpost&pid=332176"><{POST_SNAPBACK}></a></div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Shouldn't there be some tropic rains, that last for weak or two?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd--> Nope - other than hurricanes which can last a few days - when it rains, it rains hard, but for about twenty minutes! (usually).

Yeah i lived on St. Eustatius (near st. maartins) for over 4 years when i was a kid, i can only recall an actual thunderstorm once or twice haha, was clear and dry the majority of the time.

I do have to say the whole storms in the game are a bit massive at the moment.
Not so much the amount of storms but the amount of twisters.
I remember sailing from Barbados to Jamaica and I ran into 4 twisters in just that one journey <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/modding.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":modding" border="0" alt="modding.gif" />

Not to mention that wave heigh in storms is messed up and the music is missing! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whippa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":whipa" border="0" alt="whippa.gif" />

How do i go about switching out a character model with one of the ones i have in game? i wanna replace the Nathan Hawk model with Teague (or something to that effect, as long as there are no NPC's wandering around with the same skin as me). i've dug around and found the model files and the initmodels and stuff but haven't gotten anything to work.

So you are playing the storyline "New Horizons"
To change the model for "New Horizons" do this:
- Go to - PROGRAM/Storyline/standard.c
- Find the line - sl.(sn).start.model = "Blaze";
- change "Blaze" to any other model... eg. "Captain Teague"
- Start a new game

However to change your model without having to start a new game
- Go to - PROGRAM/Console.c
- Under the line - int limit; add the line GiveModel2Player("Captain Teague", true);
- Load game and hit F12

Yup works just fine thanks. do you know anywhere to find a program that converts the tga.tx file so i can edit the personal flag? whoever came up with that file format needs to be executed, the bullshit is never ending. i have photoshop and that doesn't even open the file..

Yer well it wasn't us, the original game designers did. I do know a convertor that can be found on this very website <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />
<a href="http://forum.piratesahoy.net//index.php?showtopic=11520" target="_blank">Follow Links here</a>

Well that worked fine but i opened it up once it was converted to find it's just one file with all the flags..how the hell am i supposed to add a custom flag to that properly much less get it to work in-game? it's idiotic, why is there even a personal flag option in the game if it's obviously not meant to be customized at all. and why do pirates have all kinda of unique flags? where are those in the files..

You have Build 14 Alpha 9.5 Patch 1, right? And you're looking at RESOURCE\Textures\flagall.tga.tx, right?
There's the following flags in that file, from left to right:
- Dutch
- English
- French
- Portuguese
- Spanish
- Pirate
- Neutral/Surrendered/No Nation
- PERSONAL FLAG
- American

Just replace the white-red-white flag with whatever you want as your own flag, convert back, and you're done.

In fact replacing flags is VERY much possible indeed; I have done so myself in the past.

Pirates have unique flags? What do you mean by that? In Build 14 Alpha 9.5 Patch 1, all pirates are using the same flag.

I have just found the following in PROGRAM\InternalSettings.h:<!--c1--><div class='codetop'>CODE</div><div class='codemain'><!--ec1-->// ======================================
// WEATHER CONTROLS - JL
// ======================================

#define MAX_WBALLAST                    25            // INT - how far the weighting will swing in favor of current trend.. use positive integer between 0 and 50 - 0 is no swing - 50 is major swing.. this is for Windspeed
#define MAX_RBALLAST                    25            // ^^DITTO for rain
#define MAX_FBALLAST                    25            // ^^DITTO for fog
#define MAX_ABALLAST                    25.0        // FLOAT - ^^DITTO for wind angle

#define MAX_WINDCHANGE                    5            // INT - How much the wind CAN change in one hour - use positive integer between 0 and 20
#define MAX_FOGCHANGE                    5            // INT - ^^DITTO for fog
#define MAX_RAINCHANGE                    5            // INT - ^^DITTO for rain
#define MAX_ANGLECHANGE                    1.0            // FLOAT - ^^DITTO for wind angle

#define FREE_FOG                        1        // BOOL - Allow fog during daylight hours 0 - false 1 - true<!--c2--></div><!--ec2-->
Looks like you can tweak weather settings there, such as the rain chance.

BTW: There's no particular need to say things are "idiotic", "bullshit", "people should be hanged", etc. all the time.
So far we've been able tackle most of your issues in a way that indicates no cursing was necessary.
The game might be weird in certain ways, but we <i>are</i> trying to help you here. And so far, doing a good job at it too. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rolleyes:" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

It's the sails that have the designs on them actually, just didn't really think about it and said flags by default. i turned on the pirates have black sails option or whatever it is in advanced options. they have some pretty awesome jolly rogers on their sails, one was a skeleton torso drinking a mug of beer haha. and yeah i agree this is a very responsive forum.

The sails are in RESOURCE\Textures\Ships\Sails . You can choose your own sails ingame by selecting F2>Ship>Sails>Select Sails.
That way you can select any of the pirate sails too. That interface is slightly buggy though as you will find, but won't cause any trouble.
For most sails, it should work. Give it a try and see what you can do. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doff.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":doff" border="0" alt="doff.gif" />

I like that drinking skeleton one! It says "Time flies when you're having rum"! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/24.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":rofl" border="0" alt="24.gif" />
