The Build

Downloaded the build last night and wow! Had a little trouble getting it up and running. Executed it, installed into the folder and tried to play immediately but it just crashed to desktop on main screen. Felt a barrage of profanity coming on, but checked faq docs that had also been installed into POTC folder and found I needed to clear saves and PROGRAM folder. Did this, reinstalled and it worked like a charm. I dont know if this info is available on the forum and I missed it, but it seems a bit strange to tell you this after installation, but hey I got there in the end with remarkably little hassle. For me that is saying a lot about the ease of use.

Started the game and was a little shocked. What am I wearing? Thought something must have gone wrong with the install. Am I ill? Have I joined a strange cult? Had a chat and a cup of tea with malcolm and realised what was up. When he gave me the choice of clothes I couldnt resist asking for dreadlocks, expecting him to say sorry youve only got a brown waistcoat. I saw the transformation and pi**ed myself laughing, how great! Tutorial is a natty idea, was that always meant to be in there or did someone do all of that? Thought id have a bit of a play before reading/altering anything and got into a fight with an invincible malcolm in oxbay. Lesson learned as he hacked me down remorselessly. At this point discovered I couldnt save, but started again anyway. A few seconds later I was hacked down remorselessly by a pistol wielding wench. Oh.

Thought it might be good to read the docs which answered all my questions. Also felt brave enough to edit that buildsettingsh doo dah. Changed what I didnt like, enabled saves etc braced myself for a meltdown, but it all still worked. Idiot proof I guess.

The improved F2 is wonderful, sail choice, clothes, the new sounds all add a great deal to the atmosphere. Was the grass always like that though? Seems a bit mad. Not sure if its been altered or have only just noticed it with the new wonder with which I am looking on the game.

I see what people mean when they say that this was how the game always should have been. Autobuy/sell, warping straight to the dock instead of 500 yards away, greater battle engagement distances, always run. This is what ive discovered in the first 5 minutes of playing the mod and what I was constantly narked about not having in the original. This is truly a superb effort that I can see a lot of work has gone into. A huge thank you to all those who made it possible, made it so good and made it simple enough for me to install (and small enough for me to download with a modem in one night). This is the first mod I have ever tried but it has set a high standard indeed. Thankyou. If anyone is reading this without the mod and wondering whether to get it, DO, you wont regret it.

Heh, glad you've finally "seen the light", Reverend! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_wink.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="icon_wink.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" />

And yes, Build 12 will make some great changes and also fix up some of those bugs that are still holding on... Should be good...

(no, no estimated time of arrival yet, RL and other things have delayed the release - so be patient, please!)

Reverend,

Glad to see that you're enjoying Build 11, I had the same reaction to all the improvements the modders put into the original game.

I've been meaning to say this in our previous discussions, "save strategically," meaning that a few back up saves will save you some headaches down the line and keep you from having to go back to a point in the game way back from where you've gotten to. the modders managed to fix a lot of things in the game, but there are still some original game and main quest things in the game that can "paint you into a corner" through no fault in your playing.

Looking forward to hearing of your encounters! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

good idea mate, i tend to save approximately every 6 seconds after my experiences with the original. I do, however, lose track of where i got to when i saved, i dont know if it can be done, but i for one would be grateful for the opportunity to add a few words of text to save games to keep track a little easier. Just something i thought id throw in the melting pot.

I see what you mean, to help you remember what was going on, or where you were going when you saved and then quit the game... Heh... I use `post-it` notes for that (can't live without them!).

Having an `in-game` "logbook" that you can write in would be handy, tho. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" />

I tend to save just as I'm leaving port. That way, I can always go back to that point if my voyage was unsuccessful for some reason. On land, heck... I usually don't have to worry about saving on land as the game progresses and I have a better sword or better officers with me... Only time I might save there is if I decide to go into a dungeon to have a little fun doing battle with smugglers! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/onya.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":onya" border="0" alt="onya.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

i feel a piratey expedition coming on to raid and plunder works stationary cabinet, loot all those lovely dazzling yellow post it notes, aargh. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/pirate2.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p:" border="0" alt="pirate2.gif" />

Reverend,

I just learned something that may be helpful, thanks to ALexusB, when you load a saved game, below the pictures, it shows the ingame date, and location of each save. Not as good as post it notes, but more helpful than trying to remember from the picture!
