Did you all know this?

Pirates as I remember it first came out on the C64 (now where going back eh?)

I remember going to Adelaide and paying $79.00 back then and then the wife losing the plot because my old C64 was using the portable tv and I was hooked like a fish with a big worm

Now to really take you back, the game was on the big plastic floppy drives, sorry cannot remember the name, mabye you can help me out, but you used to be able to use both sides of the disk. Again many months were lost in my quest to save my family and capture the silver train (never did manage to complete game even back then) I think from memory it was 1989 I first bought Pirates (I am not sure, bad eh ) but I remember I bought Apache Gunship around the same time. Oh the memories.

I actually kept the map when I sold the C64 as I loved the detail even back then and funny enough, just last night it was excellent to see my 14 year old son get quite excited about wanting to play Pirates. I know I am rambling on but I reckon with out a doubt SM made some excellent classic games and I have owned them all at one stage.

Drink up lads, here's to "Ho Ho Ho and a bottle of rum"!

"Avast ya swabs, Arggghhh!"!

Cheers all

Those disks

I think from memory they were called five and a quater disks, anyone want to verify this for me? <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" />

Ah, those were the times ™!

In those days, spirits were brave, the stakes were high, men were real men, women were real women and small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri were real small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri.

I can beat that I wnet thru about 7 unopend boxes with the sales guy at egghead software becasue we couldn't get the C64 version to load.

Neither of us bothered to read the manual which told you that it was a self booting floppy. The first either of us ever encountered. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/keith.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":keith" border="0" alt="keith.gif" />

Played my version on as Apple II GS

Ran at a Blazing 3 Mhz, and had no hard drive.

All the floppy drives were external

All the program disks were self booting.

The program ran off a new fangled 3.5" 720 MB floppy and you got to save
games on a 5.25"

Aye, I just found out that there is a new version and I can finally retire me trusty old Commodore and it's patched up joystick. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

I captured what was supposed to be a Windows version, but I never could get it run properly on any PC.

Dude I hope you you bought the game this time, I don't know you personally but piracy doesn't help the PC market, nothing like owning the original I say.

I personally have been irritated at all the people on the boards that have stated they have pirated copies of the game. No matter how people try to rationalize it, it is stealing.

So, would you rather we shut up about it so that you can be blissfully ignorant? What about those who have both, but downloaded prior to it's european release because they couldn't wait? You angry at those too?

Can you honestly say that you never played a pirated copy, and if not, is Pirates! a very special case?

dude, no one is Angry

It's not about anger dude, it is about being fair thats all, I live in Australia and because of piracy we pay more for software than any other country, to give you an example I paid $99.99 for the DVD release of this game and on average anywhere between $79.00 and $100.00 depending on the game, also many times because we live in Australia we do not get the games as soon as the European Countries and in some cases it can take weeks for a game to reach us an example of this is recently I bought FM2005 (a soccer management sim) I had to wait well over three weeks after it had been released but I waited and then bought the original, and with regards playing the game before release I use the option of demo as that gives the potential buyer an idea of what the game mey be like.

Simply put, the more people pirate software the more the consumer loses out and yes your right there is heaps of pirated software out there and I suspect it must seem easier to download the game rather than buy it. I hear this alot in Australia due to the cost of software.

Now you don't have to believe me but I only buy originals and the downside to that is you lose out big time when selling them to say cash convertors for a much lower price. Every year I take heaps of games down to CC and walk out with next to nothing in comparison to what I paid for them, an example of this is Kingdom Hearts by Walt Disney on the PS2, paid $120.00 for it (my sons birthdays present) and traded it recently at Electronic Boutique at RedBank for a mere $11.00 <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" />

So please don't take this post personally just read it for what it is, until people stop buying or downloading pirated software, we wil all continue to pay in the long run.

Thats my say on the subject

Cheers <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

You better put it the other way round:

If software companies stop charging fantasy prices for their products, more people would buy them!

Thinking that the prices would be lower if piracy didn't exist is a bit gullible imo. Here in norway, nothing is cheap. Almost everything you buy is expensive as hell, compared to other countries. I assume you mean australian dollars, when using that dollarsign? If it is, then a game that costs less 100 AUD is a game on sale, here in Norway. A playstation game costs 99,99% of the times exactly 599 NOK, which is according to the splendid site XE somewhere close to 130 AUD.

A PC game however, costs a little less. The most common price on PC games are 499,-, unless it's on sale of course. 106 AUD according to XE.

Anyway, the point being that prices won't go down just because we give up copying. If you think about it, the games doesn't really cost much more than it did 20 years ago, and that's kinda impressie considering people seem to have more money nowadays. At least here in Norway.

On the for and against piracy subject, it seems that for some people, piracy is more like a hobby than downloading because they don't wanna pay for it. A lot of people find having his harddisk full of pirated software to be a big deal, even though they're not gonna use it. If they didn't download it, they might have bought it either, so it doesn't do much harm to the developers. Also, piracy have helped consoles and computers in a lot of occasions. I think 90% of the people I know have bought an Xbox simply because it's so easy to hack, and some people refuse to buy a Gamecube, simply because it's too hard to pirate and they can't afford buying all their games. Same thing with PS2, it's easy to hack (although expensive) and with a pc and a dvd burner you can download games prior to the release in a lot of occasions. These things DO count when people buy a console, whether you like it or not.

The amiga and Playstation 1 are perfect examples of machines being hugely successfull with the help of a healthy warez scene. In addition, piracy helped keep the amiga alive even after the downfall of Commodore, and I think that piracy prolonged the death of the Playstation 1, and PS2 may have had to come sooner than it did.

I'm not saying this to defend piracy, but I don't think ignoring the obvious facts are helping any. Piracy can be both good and bad for the community. But the major point is, piracy will always exist, wether the prices go down or not. People aren't interesting in paying just a little, people are interested in paying NADA. Hell, look at the MP3 scene, considering how cheap a CD is, I find it even weirder that people actually download music - especially when you think about how many hours of entertainment will give you versus a game (except Pirates! of course, which could give you 15 years of fun).

Well said

My two pieces of eight on this is that if you are crafty enough to pirate the game, you ought to be crafty enough to realize that it STILL is illegal to do so, and these are PUBLIC forums.

PiratesAhoy is legally obligated to turn over to any law enforcement people the IP addresses of the people who post here if so requested - so don't think that because you have a nickname that you can't be tracked down if someone so desired to. THAT includes anyone on a public or school or library computer, too.

Personally I wouldn't mention to ANYONE in public that I have a pirated copy of ANYTHING. Maybe that's paranoia, maybe the odds are against anyone actually coming after me, but REMEMBER that Firaxis people AND Atari people are out there and regularly read the postings here.

That said, here's another homily - if you didn't vote, you don't have any right to complain... Think about it... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huh.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":huh" border="0" alt="huh.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/diomed.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":dio" border="0" alt="diomed.gif" />

Next time you want to gripe about shoddy programming or `what-have`-you in a game you have pirated, ask yourself why there might not be enough money to hire enough programmers to do a better job of it.

For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Basic law of physics. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":blah:" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/william.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":will" border="0" alt="william.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":yes" border="0" alt="yes.gif" /> <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/par-ty.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheers" border="0" alt="par-ty.gif" />

Yeah, it's easy to blame everything on piracy, but that's just being ignorant.

And if the police or anybody came to my house to search for pirated games, they'd just turn and walk away when they saw my enormous stack of original legally obtained games... :p

And I think giving the IP adresses to the law enforcement doesn't apply to all countries. Some countries are still protected by laws of privacy. I'm honestly not sure if Norway is like this, but I have a small feeling - we do have a lot of privacy rules at least.

Last note, considering some games are surpassing the budget of even hollywood produced movies, I find it hard to believe that a bug is caused by lack of funds in much more than 5% of the occasions. Most bugs are not fixed because of deadlines, lazyness or plain old incompetance. And if it's a PC game, they just release the game and release a patch later on - in some cases they don't even care to patch.

Well, I've said my piece, ignore it if you wish. That's your call. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dunno.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":shrug" border="0" alt="dunno.gif" />

<b>Bottom line, we don't advocate software piracy here on PiratesAhoy. Please, everyone, don't brag about doing it, or we will be forced do something none of us wish to do - suspend your account, or ban you altogether.</b>

Bragging about software piracy is NOT NICE for the people who own and run this website, who are doing everything they can to bring you `up-to`-date info on new pirate game releases and other news - if we get a reputation for being a hangout place for people who pirate software, none of the game developers will be interested in giving us info anymore. Go brag about software piracy at any of the really big gaming sites and see how long your posting and your membership lasts.

After all the hard work Keith and William have done to get PiratesAhoy the GOOD reputation it has with software developers, we are not about to let somebody bragging about software piracy ruin it.

<sigh!> The last thing I want to do is police after a bunch of rowdy pirates! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="rolleyes.gif" />

<img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_eek.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="icon_eek.gif" /> HOWINTHEHECK did I GET this job, anyhow???!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":blah:" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />

Ah, ok, just one question. Is it really bad to be open about downloading the game? Does it really matter that much to you? And is saying you downloaded a game actually bragging? Isn't there a difference between:

"I downloaded the game, but I will buying it as soon as it hit the local shores"

and

"na na, I downloaded the game, I'm so cool, I don't have to pay for it and your all stupid for buying it! If you want download it HERE"

?

But ok, I accept your rules and I will not mention that I've ever downloaded a game ever again and pretend I'm an angel that does nothing but good things... <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":cheeky" border="0" alt="icon_mrgreen1.gif" />
