Too many messages

The messages on the screen are causing huge lag when I'm in a big fight like a boarding operation. Is there a way to switch them off so that I only get important messages like quest updates and stuff? I don't need to know how much XP everyone gets every time I score a hit on an enemy. I know it's a simple code to change, I just don't know where to do it.

Use the "L" key <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/me.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="me.gif" />

Pressing the [L] key on the keyboard ingame will turn off a whole bunch of the messages.
