It's difficult to tell you what to do, Vassal. JSJ gave you some shortcuts, and I gave you a path... It's best if you read the "help" files that came with the program, they should give you a clue as to what to do.
Here are some more suggestions -
1.) If you are working on a ship, some things you can do are selecting the hull by using the "lasso" tool. Once you've selected the area you wish to alter, then go into IMAGE/ADJUSTMENTS/Hue and Saturation. Play with the colors - see what you can make.
2.) If you wish to color over or paint over a certain area and make it look like the area around it, use the "rubber stamp" tool. You can make the area you copy large or small - and you can then "stamp" that area and the surrounding area with that part of the texture.
3.) Adding textures is as simple as looking in the FILTERS/TEXTURIZER menu... You can texturize any image with these filters.
4.) There are other filters you may have noticed in the filters menu - play around with those - you can do some very interesting things with these filters - and if you want to find more, there are many free filters out there on the web for Photoshop. Just do a google search and you'll find them.
