Tweaking ship stats

Edwin

Landlubber
So I've been playing around with ships_init file to change some of the stats for different ships in the game, mostly with regard to their top speed (more specifically, how the smaller vessels have greater top speed than the larger fully-rigged ships like frigates and ships of the line, which shouldn't be the case), but the changes do not seem to take place consistently. To be clear, I always have realistic sailing enabled, and I start a new game to see the changes once I've tweaked the stats through ships_init file, but the game will sometimes apply arcade sailing qualities to the ships (this is very obvious as handling characteristic is completely off), or give top speed that is up to 1 knot greater than what it should be. Am I missing something here (i.e., do I need to make some additional changes to properly affect in game ship stats), or is it just my game that's acting up? Also, does anyone know how to disable the mod that assigns random bonuses / penalties to ship stats? Any help would be appreciated :cheeky

The stat modifiers aren't random; they're based on the nation of the ship's design. Easiest way to disable it: set all the shipstatsmult lines to 1.00 at the top of ships_init.c .

Not sure about the game swapping to arcade game mode. Maybe remove your "options" file. That will reset all settings to default. Then change it again and start a new game.

Thanks for the reply. I'm aware of the national stat modifier - I meant the random modifier that changes stat on top of all that, for example, giving a ship with 2500 cargo space a value of 2519 instead.

I always thought that was the national stuff at work. UNLESS it's one of the upgrades being applied; that's another possibility...

There is a lot of randomness applied to ship stats. A class 6 light fluyt can have cargo capacities from 1900 to 2300 cwt, for instance. The larger the capacity, the slower it is.
