Yup. There are some people around here whose work is excellent to such an extent that you can't go far wrong by reading whatever advice they have to give. Lots of talent here, and you never know when you're going to read that one line that sparks one of those "WOW! that's how it's done" kind of moments. I don't post much, but I've read quite a bit of the forum, and downloaded quite a bit of the artwork. Some good stuff there.

It's that kind of freely offered information that got me into this - and so I try to give that experience back to people who are just starting out... Ya never know who the next genius coder or texturer will be... If they get that little "inkling" of HEY THAT'S HOW IT'S DONE, and I CAN DO THAT! well, I'll be happy to see them develop!

Being out working in the open has its advantages, too... We won't all step on each other's toes with conflicting ideas or unknowingly duplicating work and causing bad feelings... AND... Heh... Imagine, if someone *cough* Jeff *cough* *sneeze* Barry *sneeze* comes by who might work for a gaming company *sneeze* Atari *sneeze* *cough* Firaxis *cough* and sees my talent and hires me away to work for them for scandalous amounts of money, welllllll... Well hello Catalina. I couldn't agree more. I was here at the beginning and recall the way it was before StoneD, Degas, Viper, Nathan and other coders arrived to shine a light on the subject. I think I posted the first mod at this site, one of those simple little do it yourself changes. (I recall our gracious host Vice Admiral Wallace saying something like, "Thats what I want to see here!" I have it copied and pasted to a notepad so I can remember how to do it) Had to do with changing the distance between ships when the battle started. A piddling little thing in retrospect, but it took me forever to figure it out. Code is akin to hieroglyphics for me, insofar as I can't read either. (I'm sure that coding is what causes those dreams that wake you up in the middle of the night. It is high art, I'm sure, but still there resides in me, the shadow of an ancient Pagan past , that rathers suspects it is witchery.)

I must say that you have come a long way in a short time with your texturing, having only started in January. Natural talent is a wonderful thing, and it is truly a pity when it remains hidden within, never to be discovered. And a greater pity still, when the catalyst that serves as the genesis of a budding genius is nowhere to be found. So thanks to all who have helped along the way, and thanks again, to those who help us still.

Now, I wouldn't be at all surprised if you found your way into this industry. Hey you never know. Hope you find your allergy meds. Takes me half the day to remember where I put my Geratol!

LOL! I kind of thought you might be a member of the Geratol Generation. Used to be quite a few of us here. Probably still are.

I was wondering how you got so good, so fast at your texturing! (You see there Rico? I KNEW she was a real artist!) I'd sure like to see those new ships Catalina. If you have some time for it, would you post some screenshots? Those menofwar are a hassle and a half to do, or at least they are for me. That one's in the "I don't even want to look at it" stage. I do have a tip for people who are texturing ships. I got out my old Corel 2 and Corel 2 Gallery and converted a bunch of borders to .BMPs. Some neat designs there. Or type in "clip art borders" in your favorite search engine. You never know what you might find that suits your needs for a particular project.

Edit: I was just making some some coffee and recalled seeing some , I think they were menofwar that you had done a while back? Tribal motifs or something like that? Those were really good Catalina. You really should release those. And post some screenshots if you have time?

CapitainDams, thanks. I was looking through the pictures on your site. That's quite a crew you have there. That wasn't you jumping off that cliff was it? If it was, DON"T DO THAT!! Just kidding. Been over the edge a few times myself. (Not voluntarily though.)

That's the "Voodoo Queen" - she started out as a request to make the "ugly" MOW's `better-looking` - and so this was the first one...

She was based on the idea that FEAR plays a huge role in how a battle may be won - if your enemy fears you before you even strike one blow, you will have a HUGE advantage over them... I wanted to make this ship "scary".

The other one I was working on is the guber MOW - the one with the angel figurehead? It's a `great-looking` ship but I wanted to change some things on it... It's not really finished so I don't have a screeny for it.

The "Voodoo Queen", after it's original inception, was then slated for possible use in my Fred Bob quest... But I'm not so sure that's going to happen now unless I can play around with making a cutscene for the end of the quest...

I will probably have some time to devote to putting this skin up for the game after I've finished the FBQ - actually very near finishing, WHOOHOO!!! <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/w00t.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=" :woot

LOL!! "off de edge o'de map!" Love it. You crack me up my friend! Truth is, Catalina and the other regulars have been the main source of inspiration as far as I can tell. I'm not much of a forum dweller myself, as I usually end up labeled a troll. Not that under the bridge life is all bad, mind you, but still.....

There are a lot of good people here whose work I admire. We've got Catalina, Jack Sparrow Jr., Derringer, AdmiralKoch, `Sigma-6`, and many, many others. Inspiration is a reciprocal kind of thing in its purest form; something fine, something special, beyond competition, pettiness, or simple jealousy. In that sense, and in that spirit, when we help others, we also help ourselves.

That is what Catalina is trying her best to impart to others, and I truly admire her for it. Her kind are few and far between.

There we go, those are the screens I remember! You've just got to release those Catalina! I think the concept is called "fierce face" in modern naval parlance, although I wouldn't swear to it, and the motif is surely that. It's like big eyes looking at you. A "power stare", or something like that.

Glad to hear you're getting to the end of your work on the Fred Bob quest. What a character! Surely no lack of source material from that one! LOL! Just kidding Fred Bob! You got style!

FB makes a great officer for your game... The rest of the quest is about Armand and Estrella...

HOWEVER, FB is different from your typical "`quest-hired` officer" in that I have given him the "`tavern-hired` officer" dialogs (changing clothes, status of ship cargo, hoist a new flag, &tc) PLUS I borrowed a little dialog from Rhys Bloom - he gives a lot of sailorly advice to Nathaniel (if he asks)... The best part is that all his dialog will be given in typical Fred Bob jambalaya patois... I have the "actual Fred Bob" (as opposed to the "virtual Fred Bob" character, haha!) working on that, so it's authentic. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_mrgreen1.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=" :cheeky

LOL! This really sounds great Catalina. I simply must get with the times and upgrade to Build 11 when this comes out! As soon as I've finished these ship skins I'll have to back everything up and try it.

Sounds like you and Fred Bob have put a great deal of work into this, in fact I'm sure of it. Can't wait to see it!

Will there be a sequel? When's it gon' be out? Just kidding, just kidding.

Hello Catalina. We're getting there. If I can stand the sight of these a couple of days from now, they're finished. A few of the others are in the pixel chasing phase. You know the one. Zoomed in to 300% trying to get that last seam between the planks right, or trying to get that last bit of weathering just so, or finding that pixel that glows in the moonlight. Tedious and time consuming, but there is no way around it. It always amazes me how it is the small things, the tedious detail work that seems to make or break a project. Still, I can see the end in sight from here, and soon I'll be off bothering someone else. Best get back to it though, if I want it done any time soon!
