Yeah, that can happen some times - for me mostly during huge battle... save often, safe early even in battles.
And it happens that you make a save and if you load this save it immediately crashes. But it does not happen that often to be a real game breaker.
Still, that's the only bug/issue I came across so far that can really piss me off from time to time.
Everything else are rather minor annoyances... some quests are a little buggy, unclear and unfortunately designed in a way that you can completely break them without even knowing.
The difficulty does not scale very well; the higher levels are just insane hard and unplayable.
Oh, and one more thing: the documentation.
Dont get me wrong here... it does come with a pretty well done, huge printed manual (very uncommon these days) - however, this documentation is seriously lacking on important details and constantly leaves questions open.
I never played (or even heard about) AoP before I stumbled upon COAS but I was a huge fan of Sid Meier's Pirates! games on various platforms in my youth... and COAS certainly delivers a lot good old pirate feeling here.
So yeah, for me I do think it's worth it.
