One o' th' only pirate games that I hav' seen wit a female cap'n is Pirates: The Legend of Black Kat. I don't think they giv' us o' th fairer sex, e'en if we are bloodthirsty cutthroats und'rneath, a chanc' to display what we really can do. Tabletop games seem to be th' only sourc' o' makin' tis fair fer us. Im' n't tryin' ta rant, b't I am eagerly awaitin' tis gam' an I woul' lik' a way fer us pirate lass's to be represent'd!

I think it would be cool if there was a female avatar but there would be at least one potential problem. What to do about the governor's daughters? Three options : 1) They would have to switch them up with sons. This involves a little more art, sound, and dialogue production. 2) You could become best friends instead of getting married. Might be a good solution. 3) Skip them entirely if the main character is female. This would place female avatars at a disadvantage. Yes I realise there is a fourth option but not only was that kind of thing not allowed back then, this is a family game. <img src="http://www.piratesahoy.com/forum/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

If you want to play a female character check out "Pirates of the Burning Sea", a pirate MMORPG. It should becomes available at the end of this year. They will not have captain avatars at first but when they add them they will certainly have female ones.
