Smuggling for a Governor

  • Requirements (top)

You must have a Letter of Marque.
You will need at least 300 free cargo space.
You must be on an island which has some contraband (press F2 and look at "Colonies").

    Obtaining the Quest (top)

Visit any governor of a nation with which you have a valid Letter of Marque. Say "I'd like to talk to you about some business." The governor will talk about hostiles and also a problem with smugglers. Say "I would like to hear about the smugglers."

Provided you have enough free space, the governor will ask you to infiltrate the local Smuggling gang. If you accept, you will be given a random type of contraband, a document in case you meet the coastguard, and a warning not to try to keep the cargo or the money from the smugglers for yourself!

    Doing the Job (top)

Make contact with the local smugglers in the usual fashion. (See Smuggling.) The smugglers will only look at the cargo provided by the governor - if you have your own contraband which you want to smuggle, do it without the governor's help!

If the coastguard appear, you can show them the document provided by the governor. The smugglers won't like that at all, but at least you avoid any repercussions from the nation which hired you.

When you've done the deal, you can leave, or you can arrest the smugglers. This will lead to an immediate fight. Either way, return to the governor.

    Rewards and Penalties (top)

Return to the governor who gave you the Smuggling job. Say "I've got something you'll want to see" or "I wish to report that I arrested the smugglers myself. You can read the full details in my report", depending on whether you arrested the smugglers. The governor will ask you to hand over the money, and if you arrested the smugglers then he asks you to return his cargo as well.

If you simply sold the cargo to the smugglers and then left, you receive 10% of the value of the cargo, or a flat reward of 2500 if the cargo was low enough value that 10% is less than this. If you arrested the smugglers then you get 50% of the value of the cargo. You also get a slight increase in your relations with the governor's nation, and a larger increase if you arrested the smugglers.

    However...
Starting from when you accept the job, you have 1 month to complete it. Or, after you've done the deal, if you return to the governor and for some reason don't have the money (or you arrested the smugglers and don't have all the cargo), the governor gives you 1 month to replace the money (or cargo). If you return within the month and pay the governor what you owe, nothing more will be said, though you won't get any of the rewards.

If you don't complete the mission within a month, or if you are told to return money or cargo and fail to do so within a month, the governor declares you an outlaw. You lose your Letter of Marque and any rank associated with it, and the governor's nation is now hostile to you.
