newbie help

I just got this game yesterday, based in large part to this website and the favorable reviews found here. My question is should I play the game as is for now or load the mods first. Also, I am not that techie and some info found here I am not sure I understand. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

I would you suggest that you play the game as is for now, until you get used to the controls (sailing, fighting etc.) and various things that happen in the game.
That way you will have at least an idea of what to expect when you move onto the mods (which are HIGHLY recommended).
DO keep an eye on the forum though as updates are almost continuous.
Pieter Boelen's posts (admin and game compiler) will give you the best information in Where, What and How to install them.

It definitly can't hurt to play the original game for a while.
It'll help you appreciate what we've added to the game.
