2 letters of margue

just a funny and probably unintentional event.
as usual I obtained my British letter from the main quest by talking to the governor about the attack on barbados (oxbay event).
while in port a prince fort doing the Find Angelique Moulin's Father quest where you have to talk to the guard who attacks you in the fort., i talked to the inspector, one of the random civilians that spawns, turns out I can either take the town, which may mess the story line up, (if I can take the town, how would it mess it up as I want to try taking the town.) or a free letter of margue. which add France to my allied powers. as well as Britain. but doesn't add a personal quest log as I didn't join France legally. French ships don't attack or ports. nor will any Dutch or Spanish and I'm still flying a white flag. before continue with this totally unrealistic notion of world peace. how unintentional is this mechanic?

The warning about messing up a storyline only applies if you are playing a storyline which relies on Port au Prince being French. Or, for that matter, a sidequest such as "Find Angelique Moulin's Father". Antoine Chamfort is going to look very odd being the only soldier in French uniform if the entire rest of the garrison is now British. xD

Having multiple Letters of Marque isn't an odd version of world peace; it means you're a mercenary offering your services to whoever will pay you. You probably won't keep both of them for long, though. If you attack anything belonging to France or its allies, you'll earn points on your British Letter of Marque and you'll lose the French one; and vice versa if you attack something belonging to Britain or its allies. If you're playing FreePlay, keep an eye on international relations because they can change randomly - Britain and France may make peace regardless of what you've been doing, or they may break alliances, and you may find that they're both at war with the same nation. Or you can attack pirate ships and settlements.

One time, I collected Letters of Marque from all nations and made a living as a pirate hunter. It took a long time to earn promotions, partly because the more Letters of Marque you have, the less points you earn from each nation when you attack their enemy; and partly because pirates only tend to use relatively small ships so they weren't earning me many points to start with.

That's exactly why it took my poor Helen so long to gain the required Spanish privateer rank for the Imperial Escort quest. One, I got another commision from the Port Royal governor after evacuating him and his wife, and two, Spain and England decided to make peace with France and I was stuck with hunting down puny pirate vessels instead.

But as of today, I got there. We're at war with France again, and I'm now in the middle of the bonus quest. Very enjoyable so far! Helen in a pink dress is a win and if I'm not mistaken, you couldn't resist making fun of the idiotic man2 as well.

Raiding pirate settlements is much more lucrative both for gold and for promotion points than just going after their ships. You should have had the Dauphin Royale at that point, which should be able to take on Turks Island fort easily. Otherwise, get the "Landing Party" ability, either in person or through a First Mate, then go after unfortified pirate settlements.

Raid a pirate settlement. Steal all the gold from the store. Go to the shipyard and give one of your ships the corsair refit, which takes you to the next day. The store is now back to normal prices, so you can sell the gold back to it. When you want to make friends with the pirates again, raid Turks Island, demand ransom from the governor, then give him some of it back to pay him to restore your relations to pirates. :rpirate

Indeed, someone else long ago changed the description for "man2" to say "Just the right thing to blend in well with the village idiots", so I played along.

i think the money you get for raiding towns is too much, i mean you raid 1 or 3 french towns and put 3/4 in the bank, you are set in terms of money forever..
sure i like and get a 'happy feeling' bankrupting a town and stealing all that gold silver and money, but balance wise?. idk.
the other day i got 12 millions plus store robbery from one raid.
